I would agree with you, they are probably around the same size, but then The Cure have more of a world-wide appeal and it works in their favour, irrespective of whether or not they are bigger in other countries, they are not a small band in the UK. But then as far as the UK is concerned, are Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins, Arcade Fire, Pulp etc, bigger than the Manic Street Preachers or The Cure?

You're also not taking into account influence, demand as a live act, how good each band is live, both bands are legends but most people would say The Cure are the bigger legend and have more songs that people know. There is a lot more factors than just the size of each group. Stevie Wonder's last few albums have done pretty crappy as far as the charts are concerned but no-one argued against him headlining Glastonbury.

I suspect that The Cure got offered to play NME in 2009 after they won the godlike genius award (Manics played there when they won), so I don't really see why they would accept it now.

At the end of the day, IF The Cure play Reading then they would headline. They are not going to play in their home country on a second stage, especially when they are headlining mainstages across Europe and could easily accept a 'lower' offer (Latitude, Rock Ness for example) on the UK circuit for headlining.

Just to point out, he does say, we're not doing any, I don't think. And it does actually say about Euro festivals at the top. Does doing a UK festival actually fit in as much? By that I mean they are a British band so for them them euro fests ins't necessarily a UK one. Whereas a British band saying were not doing any euro fests, Coachella and that's it, we think.

BTW, I don't believe they are anymore than any other.

By Arctics saying they aren't doing any European fests, could they have meant on the continent?

I'm sure I saw something like one of the Reading organisers, or someone to do with it say (Don't quote me on this :P) that this year they have the 'ultimate headliners' or something to that effect? If so, Foo Fighters, Kasabian and Arctic Monkeys really are, imo of course, the ultimate headliners for todays current Reading and Leeds market if that's what was meant by whoever said that.

LOL For what conceivable reason would The Cure have for headlining NME? The only way it COULD happen is if The Cure were taking their 'reflections' show on the road like Primal Scream last year - but that isn't happening and The Cure wouldn't do it anyway as it would not work. For a standard Cure festival performance, its not going to happen

Its like asking one of the UN veto members to give up their vote, there is no reason for them to it.
