2012 Lineup

Just because a band has been around so long, that doesn't mean they aren't worthy headliners. The fact that they are headlining festivals all over Europe surely shows they are doing something right still, all these festival organisers can't be wrong xD

I don't see anything wrong with two highly relevant headliners like Foos and Kasabian, and then a punt on someone like The Cure. If they're confirmed, I will give them a decent listen, if I'm not overly fussed, there are other tents I can go to :)

Backwards. Reading should focus on current, modern music. Modern headliners, modern lineups.

In which case that'd rule out the Foos - and then you'd probably complain.

The Cure are one of the remaining 'classic' acts around that haven't yet done festival-overkill (tho it looks like they might manage it this summer.), they're an act who certainly deserve a prominent place in rock history, they have managed to remain somewhat 'cool' rather than becoming regarded as cheesy dad-music (in the way, say, of Blondie), and have a unique style and sound with a strong influence and relevance to a lot of the electronica, etc, of today.

What I'm saying is that they've got everything there which makes them a strong and interesting headliner, and which is a better fit with today's R/L than others who've got to do it - even the foos.

Some people moan like buggery when the same sets of headliners come round again and again. If R/L then does something outside of that another bunch of people (and probably many of the same ones too) then moan like buggery about that.

It must be great fun being Melvin and having to try and please such a contrary bunch.

It might not be The Cure of course, and if it is then I reckon they're a smaller draw by their own name than some are guessing. But if R/L has got them I reckon it's a great booking for the festival as a festival (rather than it being a straighforwards show of all the bands everyone already likes).

Festivals are about musical diversity. Now's your chance to diversify. :)

I disagree with this. There needs to be a mix for the the festival to prosper and continue.

50 Cent into Green Day didn't work.

Dizzee into The Libs worked only because they have similar fan bases...

another,,, The Prodigy into Arctic Monkeys didn't work.

You don't want to get the entire crowd jumping around and going mental, and then have The Cure come on and douse everyone in a their gloomy guitar aural landscaping

Foos had a well charted album last year, don't even try to deny their relevance in the rock community.

there's still nothing new or modern about them tho.

By the way, Neil. Remind me of why you believe Green Day shouldn't headline, because, and correct me if I'm wrong, it had something to do with how they aren't current or something.

I've not said they shouldn't headline, I've merely said that I don't believe they will.

I'm sure you said something about them not selling out bestival that well, so it wouldn't be a great booking?

It depends if you think a festival is about giving you the perfect line-up of every band you already know, or whether festival line-ups should have3 an element of exposing you to the things you don't know.

For the richness of the R/L line-up (presuming that everything else is much like we all expect) it's a fantastic booking I'd say.

All that needs to happen now is for some narrow minded and self-absorbed people to open their minds and realise it. :)

(PS: I'm saying this despite thinking that the cure are a pretty average [at best] live band. Their status still deserves respect, and I can't see any reason aside from narrow-mindedness why they shouldn't be considered a great headliner for R/L).

Strange. I'm almost convinced you had argued that they shouldn't. Odd.

Nope, I've not quite done that.

I've said that I don't believe them to be huge sellers of tickets, and I've said that back against people who are claiming that they are huge sellers.

So I don't think they'll be a huge surge of demand because they're on the bill, but anyone who is put off going to Reading because they're on the bill i'd say doesn't deserve a festival ticket anyway, because they're too narrow minded to properly appreciate what's put on for them (that doesn't mean I think everyone should see the cure btw).
