Ireland travel

If you're travelling from Dublin you basically have two travel options - fly or sail.

If you choose to fly Ryanair are offering very cheap flights into Bristol airport at the moment. You could fly into other airports in the general region (Exeter, Plymouth, Cardiff or even Heathrow) and catch a train to Castle Cary and a bus to the festival site but you'll only be extending your travelling time. Bristol airport is definitely the closest. There are also plenty of buses from the airport into the city centre where you can get a bus to the festival site from Temple Meads station. I flew into Bristol a few years ago on the early Wednesday morning flight and rented a car. We had to rent a car because we were collecting a friend along the way but it allowed us to fill the boot with beer and travel to Glastonbury in our own time and in relative comfort. Renting a car cost about £70/80 each for 4 people. The down side to flying are the restrictions on what you can bring on board the plane. And you can be sure that Ryanair will try to queeze as much money out of you if your bags are overweight.

If you have your own car and a little more time on your hands then sailing is probably the best option. For years i used to get a late Tuesday evening ferry from Dublin to Holyhead and drive through the night from there. If one person is doing all the driving then this journey can be a bitch because it takes about 6 hours and you loose a night's sleep. In recent years i've split the journey by getting the Tuesday morning ferry from Rosslare to Pembroke and staying the night in Shepton Mallet. This option gives you plenty of time to stock up on supplies (you'll pass the massive Asda Walmart Supercentre in Bristol) and have a few pints the night before. There's also a back road out of Shepton Mallet which will bring you almost right into Pilton unobstructed. There's also a Tuesday evening ferry which should enable you to arrive in the car parks well before gates open on Wednesday morning.

Price wise, the ferry is probably the cheapest option if you have 4 people - about €80 per person return. It's also the less stressful option. You don't have to queue for security, flights, bags, transfers, buses etc. and you can bring as much booze, clothes and camping equipment as you want. But flying is definity the quickest option.

Excellent synopsis by Feed The Monkeys.

I've done it every which way over the years.

Flying to Bristol and car hire is good if time is tight, but limited on gear you can bring.

We have kids these days so driving over is best for us.

We load the car to the max and give ourselves plenty of time.

Getting the Tuesday morning Rosslare to Fishguard crossing this year. €324 return.

Gonna sleep in the car park Tuesday night.

Last few years we have booked a Travelodge in Bridgend, half way to the boat, going home.

Nothing like a hot shower and a few pints after a week in a tent....

Take an extra day, or so, either side of the festival and relax.

It's well worth it.
