DLNA - connecting tv to my pc?

Anyone else use a dnla enabled tv/blu ray player to connect to their media server on their pc? I know t8yman recenlty got one, not sure if he's got it working?

Ive just got a tv and blu ray player that is dnla enabled but no matter what media servers (tversity, twonky, serviio) i run on my pc they don't show up on my tv or blu ray.

The they connect to the internet ok as i can watch you tube, i player etc, but i just can't get the media server part of it working

anyone got any ideas as to how to set it up, could it be a router probelm?

No idea what the issue is you have but I just use a Buffalo Linkstation 1TB network drive which I have attached to my PC via my router. I can then stream anything I like to my PS3>TV or Laptops from that with no additional software etc needed.

That's the thing, I've got an aver revo connected to the network and that can run all my files ( mkv, avi, mp4, mp3) on my tv from my pc so this should work fine but it's not

I can just stick to using that but it would be nice to get this working

I need some tips on integration. I'm an old school separates type of guy who has good knowledge of teles and hi-fi equipment, but nigh on zero on computers. I have an HD TV that's about to be replaced by a 3D model and I'm getting a new custom PC. I want to stream stuff from my PC to my tele, so what do I need? I generally want to integrate as much as is technically, physically and fiscally possible.

All input is welcome and I don't mean to highjack the thread, it just seems relevant.

slightly different, but much the same thing ...

I have my audio files on a server, and have no problem connecting to them from other PCs on my home network. I've recently bought a hifi that has DLNA and want that to pick up my audio files too, but no matter which uPnP/DLNA server I use, while the hifi can see the DLNA server (I currently have serviio installed) and the folders in the path configured for the server, it can't see the audio files within those folders.

Does anyone have any ideas?

my understanding is that dlna doesnt need a media server per se, simply a shared folder, which is visible to all devices on the network. I could be hugely wrong there, but thats how my new dlna enabled telly works.

and wormy, if the new telly is gonna be near enough to the pc - a hdmi cable will be much more suitable. f**k streaming where you dont HAVE to.

you dont use a media player, just a storage device. did you get a new telly? I literally just plug a usb hdd into my telly and change the "source" on the telly to HDD, and it plays.

Cheers. Understood. Agreed. But not achievable.

The computer sits at the back of the office and the television sits on the opposite wall integratd into the amp etc through HDMI cables integrated into the wall and connecting to the media cabinet through faceplates on the side wall.

There's the amp (Onkyo - from your recommendation I recall), x-box, Sky, blu-ray, wireless router - essentially, the usual suspects. The PC is connected to the router through the side wall entering through the same faceplate channel. So, any ideas?

I can't undersatnd how the tv can't see the meia sever i'm running, you do defo need a media server as that is the option you select on the remote.

My revo runs perfectly streaming full 1080p files ad that didn't take much setting up, so it's strange this is giving me all this trouble

It's got to be a router problem but i'm lost when it comes to ports, port forwarding etc

that's defo incorrect.

A DLNA device (client) sends a DLNA signal to the server, which the server rejects or accepts (dependent on configuration or manual intervention), and if accepted it is then able to send back data to the client's requests for data.

If your TV is seeing your shared network drives then it also has a 'standard' network client within it, and it's that which is letting you see the shared drives.

is your TV and DLNA server on the same sub-net of your network?

When I was trying to get my set-up working, something I read said that DLNA &/or uPnP devices had to be on the same sub-net to work, as that's a part of the technical spec for these things.

This was important info for my own set-up, as my server is on a different subnet because it has a 'proper' internet accessible IP address, while the rest of my network is using the standard 'reserved' IP ranges for internal networks.

in that case, install tversity on your pc, point it at your media library and stream the media to your xbox, it works solidly. as much a I hate to say it - simples!

and yes, I do believe I did recommend the onkyo, I take it you are happy with it?

Media library? I don't download. And please don't say simples.

It's a very good piece of kit, though too fat to fit in the infra-red section of my cabinet so I need to find something slimmer. I'll be keeping it for use downstairs though. Very nice in 9.1.

you've lostme there to be honest, not really sure how to find out if it's on the same subnet? The tv shows up on the router diagnostic page as connected to the routerand i can access all the viera cast peages through it, you tube etc, but cant connect locally?

essentially, devices on the same sub-net will all share the same first three parts of an IP address.

In my experience most routers for home use tend to use the reserved range for internal networks that start with either 192.168.0.xxx or 192.168.1.xxx, but there's other reserved ranges too (I forget what they are).

So anyway, you can probably check what IP addresses your devices are using via your router (as they normally are able to list the connected devices). If the first three parts (each part separated by a ".") of the IP addresses are all the same then they are using the same sub-net.

If they're different, then reconfigging things so that they all use the same sub-net might cure the problem you're having.
