Sounds like a late reported april fool joke to me..

"I've got this bullfighter coming over from Portugal with a cape to fight an artificial bull in a mock bull fight.

"And with soundproofing from these lock gates from Devizes, soundproofing is really important, it's going to be fantastic."

Perhaps its bull fighter al la Manuel of Faulty towers and 'bull' as in cuddly 2 ft bull as in

Spinal Tap 'stonehenge' - Now thats worth seeing!

Totally with cejx, russycarps on this one - I felt very uncomfortable reading this and hope I am way off the mark in thinking it comes across as glorifying a truly repulsive tradition. We shall see though!

The whole thing is wrong, and I hope we get to address what we have heard pre fest, and if the powers that be see this, they will address accordingly. Night. XX

I'm assuming I'm Mr Freak!!

I think thats even worse TBH... Mr E... "don't like" on this occasion.

I do a lot of anti bull fight campaigning, and whilst this isn't glamourising the hell that goes on in a Spanish bull ring, or anything like that, there is a suggestion that what goes on in a bullring is somehow OK, which seems a really odd thing - and even more peculiar to have at Glastonbury.

Why bother poking your nose in to other peoples culture? have you been to a bull fight it's a great spectacle and on a par with our rock concerts the way the crowd react. how about bringing back fox hunting for the weekend ?

There are not going to be people on the pyramid stage dressed as egyptian pharaohs simulating the whipping of slaves though, as far as I am aware

but if there was....

it would be viewed as a spectacle in its own right, and not a suggestion that Pharaohs whipping slaves was a good thing that should be brought back.

I think some people posting in this thread need to step back and consider how ridiculous some of what they've posted is. ;)

Look, we all know earthly Eavis is. Anti pollution, anti third world debt, anti big corporations ruling the world, anti leaving litter that the cows might pierce their feet on in later months.. it's a quite spectacular knee jerk to suggest he's creating this structure to 'glorify' animal cruelty. It's completely laughable in fact.

I get that this is a forum and people can discuss what they want, but have a bit of common sense please. Wait and see. My guess is that it'll be a really great spectacle which also in some way pokes fun at the absurdity of bull fighting. But I don't know. None of us do.

Let's wait till there's some substance before stringing anyone up. All logic suggests it's not going to be anything controversial.

I agree with all the previous posts, we dont know for sure what this is all about but that quote - directly from Michael Eavis himself - mentions a real bullfighter coming over from portugal to the festival.

That is unequivocal (unless the quote has been completely made up by the BBC). Even if this fellow is just simulating a bullfight, he himself is an actual bullfighter - he fights and kills bulls for the pleasure of others for a living.

I dont want anyone like that at the festival, least of all performing and (no doubt) getting paid by the festival.

In basic terms, a small share of my ticket price is going to a bullfighter.

This does not sit well with me at all.

Don't ever go to Birmingham then (The Bullring is a shopping centre in Birmingham).

While I'm sure this thing won't be explicitly condoning bullfighting (y'know, 'cause if it was, they'd have a real bull) it's probably worth pointing out that, as far as I'm aware and Greenpeace and sealife aside, Glastonbury has never particularly worked closely with any animal charities. And given that Eavis is a dairy farmer it's probably not a huge leap to assume that fighting animal cruelty isn't exactly top of his list of hot topics. Given that some of the more fundamentalist animal cruelty organisations would want his farm shut down. I'm sure he'd say he was against animal cruelty if asked, but I doubt he cares to the extent of letting it get in the way of running something cool.

Glastonbury has a reputation of basically embodying all these left-wing principles, and it does economically and socially, but it's a dangerous path to start imposing your own values on it just because you feel they fit in to the same category.

Yet if we take this attitude and apply it right across the festival, then anyone who works for or has worked for any remotely morally dubious company should also be excluded - and they're supporting the ticket prices no less than a real bullfighter is taking from it.

And when it comes down to it, there's not one of us who isn't somehow tainted by the morally dubious. ;)
