The Old Firm Casuals

Lars Frederiksen from Rancid has a new side-band called 'The Old Firm Casuals'.

They have a rough edit of a song out just now. A sample of the lyrics - 'we'll smash up your bar...Lets go let's go Casual!'

Is it just me or is this either the biggest pisstake ever or is it a case of an American being overly proud of his family roots yet not actualy researching into it and in turn making a fool of themeselves?

Its neither. It says something about the 'fame' of the ugly sisters that a band can call themselves this and no-one thinks its a bit weird. Within the bubble of Scotland the Old Firm are huge, out with Scotland they are almost as insignificant as the rest of the SPL.

Rangers and Celtic should be happy about it. It's rare that the old firm name can be associated with talent.

I was similarly upset when I found out Black Rebel Motorcycle Club weren't actually a motorcycle club led by Marlon Brando and it's interesting to see the only people in the thread saying the Old Firm are huge around the world are the scots.

As for the band Lars talking about being a thug is very much typical and probably just went with the name as it sounds thuggish, I think he supports Millwall if I remember correctly.

It's got pretty much nothing to do with the old firm, there is an interview with him on the amp magazine site.

"It’s kinda like this: it has nothing to do with any kind of football rivalry, any sectarian religious shit. The name THE OLD FIRM, I actually was paying homage to my DMS family that’s been around since 1987 and it’s kinda like that COCKNEY REJECTS song “We Are The Firm.” "

Full interview is here.

Most people in the world has no idea what the 'Old Firm' actually is though - ie two completely hideous football teams. I'm going to say 99.999% of the world doesn't know what the Old Firm is and 99.999% doesnt know who Hamilton FC are. We, as Scottish football fans, think the rest of the world gives a f**k about our teams but they don't. Put it this way, do we know many of the names for American sports rivalries? And more people are likely to know them than know anything about the Old Firm.

Oh theres no doubting that Celtic are huge round the world - if you ever see a non English prem shirt in a shop in the UK its allways a Celtic one. As said above they have the Irish expat influence on them... However the same cant be said for Ragers I think.
