Loopallu 2011

So after heading up three years ago to the best little fest in the west, we're heading up this year as part of our honeymoon. Whilst we flew up in 2008, we're doing it in the camper this time. 495 miles each way according to the sat nav. Taking it easy obviously, starting out on the Monday after our wedding and stopping off in the (English) Lakes, Loch Lomond-ish and then Kintail before getting to Ullapool on Thursday.

Line-up wise we're not really that fussed. Dreadzone/Alabama 3/Levellers/3 Daft Monkeys, I'd by overjoyed with. We'll just have to get our tickets and campervan pass sorted, on which, a question, if you want to stay at the site on Thursday night, how do you sort that out?

See yae at the white pudding shop!

Thinking about heading to this, whats the score with the fringe gigs, do you just turn up or are they ticketed are they all in bars and what time do they start (as soon as the festival stops or before?)

Can you come and go from the festival to say get a nice bar lunch late afternoon then head back in, is the camp and festival all in one or seperate?

Sure i'll think of some more.

There's 5 or 6 pubs in the town that all have music on the 2 nights after the festival bands finish. You don't need any tickets. The first pub is literally by the entrance to the campsite and the rest within pretty easy walking distance. They're usually open till 1 am (I think?) There's an Indian Restaurant by the camp gate as well + nice food in various other places.

The campsite is a proper campsite with paved roads, flushing toilets and showers (luxury) It can be the windiest spot in the world as you are right on the side of Loch Broom and pretty chilly at night. The scenery is beautiful. The campsite is in the town so you can pitch your tent and then walk 5 mins up the road to Tesco's to get your supplies of everything you need supplies of. Or you can wander down to Boots or the paper shop or the camping shop or whatever.

The 'arena' is basically one big tent - the advantage of this is you have no dilemmas about which band you're going to see, there's only one on at a time. (or you can go to the pub) There's a beer tent, usually with sing along type acts like Davy Cowan in it, a couple of food stalls, a merchandise tent and I think a real ale tent but I might have imagined that. That's it. 2,500 capacity I think. Usual carry on about getting searched for booze going into the arena. It'll just take you a couple of minutes to walk from your tent to the arena so you can go back for a drink at the tent if you want.

You can do all the touristy stuff while you're there too if you want. We went on one of the cruises on Loch Broom one year and I've been to the museum and gone for walks etc. I find it a kind of 'less stressful' end to the festival season - proper loos, no agonising over which band to see etc.

I don't think there is anything specifically laid on for kids if you were bringing them.

I've got my ticket anyway!

We had an absolutely brilliant honeymoon in the campervan up to Loopallu. 1,196 miles in total, lots of good food, ale and whisky. I think we'll do Loopallu every few years as a treat, unless a very appealing line-up comes up. On the other hand I'd love to visit Ullapool at a different time of the year, do you get midgies in December or January?
