Festival Team Blog

It’s a flurry of activity here at DL HQ with the whole team back to full throttle organizing all the nuts, bolts and entertainment for DL11.

Couple of additions for you…. This year we have Becky looking after all the entertainment on the campsite and she is also overseeing all the ‘extra’ activities you will see around the site. She has been working with the Theatre, Performance and Event Design Students at Birmingham City University on some creative designs for the campsite entrance again. We are also having fun with the campsite names this year and will be looking to you guys to help us pick some new names based around out tattoo characters (more info to follow). We have also been looking at ways to make the info points become more accessible, fun features of the campsites, so be sure to stop off on your way past to and from your tents! They are there for your use so get to know your info point teams.

We are all really pleased with The Doghouse, the newly named Download entertainment tent on the Campsite, and everyone here is looking forward to seeing what Becky has lined up for it. Not only a new name but also the addition of a full bar which I’m told will be cheaper than the arena!!!

We have been signing off all the merchandise that will be available this year and thankfully all the bands playing at the Festival will have representation on our T Shirts etc, as they ought! New to this year’s range is the introduction of a Download nodding dog for the car and we are looking to run a competition on the boards to design a new car bumper sticker, so look out for this! This is all in response your requests to have more car related merchandise.

In the arena we are back to one main stage (phew) and the site is looking really good. We were up at Donington on Monday and the whole of the racetrack is looking great. There has been loads of new investment works done on the site and it feels like the circuit is being reformed back to its glory days. It was a stunning day and the site looked brilliant with the sun shining across the Derbyshire hills!

We have a couple of new additions to the Arena…. We have introduced a bigger funfair this year which will be positioned near the Pepsi Max Stage…There are also a few additions from our sponsor partners which should be announced on the website soon so keep your eyes peeled for updates. Another arena addition, which we are working on with our catering team, is the addition of a small food court. This has enabled us to invite some different types of independent caterers who wouldn’t have been able to attend in the past so we are looking forward to getting feedback from you all on how you feel this works. If all goes according to plan and the feedback is good we maybe look to run it out across more of the site in 2012.

The tax man has been knocking at our door with the last budget! Today we have to consider an extra 7p on vat and another 5p on duty and inflation. In addition, we are able to serve 1/2 pints (due to the new code on drink sizes) which may please some of you. Sadly, we have also had to up the prices at Download to the following…

New Arena Prices are:

£4 for a pint of beer or cider

£4 for a wine

£4 for Jager

£2 for 1/2 pint of beer or cider

£6 for a vodka and Red Bull

The prices are all round figures, so this should help to minimize the queues at the token booths without you all scraping around for 1p’s! As always, these prices include the cup-recycling scheme, which will be in operation once again. We are pleased to announce we are also bringing back the Real Ale bar which was so successful last year you drunk it dry. This will be located in the Red Bull Bedroom Jam Stage area.

New Prices Campsite off sales:

£6 for 4 Tuborg cans or Gaymers cans – no change from 2010.

£6 for 4 Carlsberg or Tetley cans – up from £5 in 2010

£8 for 4 Guinness – not sold before

It was never in our plan to up the beer prices in 2011 but sadly we have had to respond to the budget demands.

Emma and Jen-e our crack Artist Liaison team have started to advance the show with all the artists coming to download from main stage to the Jagermister Stage. All the riders are flying in and no doubt the crazy requests…. They’ve also been working on all the backstage facilities for the artists like the massage areas, tattooist (a must for DL!), and the decision of the week is what the artist caterers should serve for dessert….. Lemon meringue or Chocolate Soufflé!!!! The success is in the details people!

We are busy getting everything finalised for moving onto site to start to building our mini town from the end of May it doesn’t seem like a year ago that we took Download 2010 down!

So their costs have gone up 12p. The pint price has gone up a lot more than that?

Obviously the organisers had no idea the budget was going to effect beer prices this year. Do they think people are that stupid!?

There's nothing worse than corporate crap.

Will still take a crate between a mate of mine but I think that will be it unless I have a drink in the arena!

Expected the price rise tbh though!

Hopefully they will look at better shops and stalls in the Arena. Lots of emphasis is put on the campsite stalls and entertainment ( quite rightly ), but day ticket holders ( me last year and this ) are left with merch stands and burgers bars.

We couldn't even buy a plaster anywhere last year. We were told by event staff to go to the pharmacy in the campsite, but obvously we weren't allowed in.

Hopefully, the milkshake stall will be there!
