Hey all,

There is a group of 5 of us travelling from Ireland on tuesday night (wednesday morn)on the ferry and was wondering could anyone tell us what time the likes of 24hr Tesco, Asda and the like stop selling alcohol at, in Ireland its 10pm and we hope to travel light on the ferry and stock up when we arrive which will be about 5am.

Are you coming into Holyhead and are you are driving? if so am sure at some point during the trip you could find a tesco.... think they may serve from 8am. :) Doubt you'd get alcohol at 5am though...but always worth a try..

Unfortunately, there's no definitive answer.

The licensing for this kind of thing is handled entirely at a local level - I think that all Supermarkets probably want to sell a complete range of products whenever they're open, the thing stopping them is whether the local council will let them do so. Some 24 hour supermarkets do have 24 hour Alcohol licences, but that's certainly not universal.

It's probably best to look at your route map and the Sainsburys / Morrisons / Asda / Tesco websites to find stores that are likely to be open when you're going near - once you've find a few candidates, E-Mail the store in question to find out when/if they start/stop selling Alcohol.

Anyone know what the story is with the Tesco Superstore in Wells? Every time we've got a taxi from Bristol Airport our drivers swore there was nothing selling beer on route without a major detour.. Finally got around to looking on Google Earth and found this Tesco right where I always suspected there would be one. Only thing is that we'll be there around 8.30am and all I can find online is a thing saying it will be open from 6am. No word at what point they start selling alcohol and I can't find much on the Mendip council page about their off sales times.

if your driving would you not be better just getting your drink before you come, I know drink is a lot more expensive in the republic but do you really want to be hanging about for ages - even though morrissons etc open at 8am, this doesnt mean that they start serving drink at this time....you'd prob be better just bringing it with ya

We're flying over and getting a taxi from the airport to the festival. Weight limit is 15kg on Ryanair so not really an option to bring a huge amount with us. To be honest I'm not pushed on having cans (considering the cider and cold beer available on site) and will pick up some bottles of spirits in the airport (conveniently in plastic bottles) but I haven't been able to convince the others they'll be fine without cans. They'll be told every minute spent in the supermarket is 10 extra in a queue so they better be quick about it too.

Thanks! I'm pretty sure if Shepton Mallet do it Wells will too.

Just bring your booze with you. There is no restriction on the amount of booze you can bring over. Well once its for personal consumption. We're in the same boat (literally) and will probably get drink before the boat.

So in Shepton Mallet, it sounds like the best option for beer/alcohol is Tesco.

Forgive my questions, but I'm from U.S., and not so familiar with Tesco. Will they stock a good selection of beer in cans? Do they have straight alcohol, and does it only come in glass bottles. If so, would I be able to buy plastic decanters there for the alcohol?

Tesco stores are generally large supermarkets, I guess a little like wallmat in the US, they'll have a decent selection of beers in cans(most of the local supermarkets are also usually well prepared for the influx of festival goes so will have additional supplies of canned beer)

As for spirits you won't find anything in plastic bottles it's all glass but just buy bottled water in 2l plastic bottles (cheapest in tesco is usually lest than 20p, look for tesco value brand) and use the bottle

the last time i used the ferry to get to england was 2 years ago and totally forgot i had a crate of carling in the boot as it was left over from oxegen festival the week prior and the bastards confiscated said beer in customs at pembroke so dont want a repeat of that again, so safest option is to buy over in england and yep prob save some dollars too ;)
