Leaving by bus

A rule of thumb I always use is that chaos can break out causing massive backlogs leaving the site at any time, therefore either leave as early as possible to minimise your impact. Same goes with coming in. The only other option for both is to wait it out, which at times can be a ballache.

I've found that National Express are fairly organised and it's fairly civilised leaving the site. They have separate queues for each coach time (though you do end up queuing to get to the appropriate queue!) , and separate 'pens' for each destination. I've only ever left at 9.30 though, so maybe it's different at other times. I usually aim to get there an hour before the coach leaves, but in all honesty could probably turn up with 30 minutes to spare and get the same result.

No idea how it works with the coaches arranged by the festival, but I know there were plenty of complaints about the chaotic queuing a few years back. I've only ever used the bus shuttle to the train station once (2009) and wasn't really impressed that the reasonably orderly queue was turned into a squashed scrum by funneling everyone through a winding pen.

Leaving by car seems to be a completely lottery (depending on what field you're parked in and what time you're leaving), so all in all National Express seem to offer the most civilised way of leaving the festival. Other than by motorbike! :)
