The Wee Chill

Saturday 21st May 2011

4.30pm-11pm

People's Palace & Winter Gardens

Glasgow Green

Glasgow G40 1AT

Ladies and gentlemen, we present to you, the first big weekend of the summer. The familiar all day summer knees up returns on May 21st to a brand new location at People's Palace on Glasgow Green, sprawling it's limbs across four different stages indoor and out, welcoming an absurd roster of talent to our dear green place. Regardless of what you're after we are confident that we'll have something to suit your taste, whether it's the cutting edge, genre-hopping sound of a certain Mr. Mohawke, the legend that is Derrick Carter or simply a few pints in the sun (fingers crossed). Thirst quenching bar provided by the fine folks over at Diageo drinks, making this the perfect start to the season.

STAGE ONE: SUBCULTURE VS SENSU

Headlining the first stage of the day will be a back to back set between Chicago house(hold) names Derrick Carter and Mark Farina. Mark befriended Derrick Carter in 1988 at a record store in Chicago during a time that he was experimenting with a deeper style that went beyond house music, dropping De La Soul, disco classics and other material that wasn’t being played in the main rooms of nightclubs. Whilst exploring his love for the purist forms of house music, Mark developed his trademark style, known as "Mushroom Jazz": acid jazz infused with the West Coast’s jazzy, organic productions along with urban beats. Guy Gerber (live) has attracted a lot of attention lately. First came This Is Balagan, which attracted Sven Vath's attention to Guy’s unique melodies and production skills. Then came Sea of Sand, a collaboration with Shlomi Aber, which appeared on Cocoon’s Compilation F, with its breathtaking memorable melody, that introduced Guy’s production to a wide new range of electronic audiences. The lynchpins of the stage are the Sub Club's Saturday night residents Harri & Domenic, the minds behind Subculture, one of the longest running club nights in the UK and in our opinion two of the finest DJs in operation today. But then, we would say that, wouldn't we? Sensu are a constantly evolving live act who have taken influences from various places whilst combining different technologies to enhance their existing musical talent. Their current set-up includes the use of a 909 drum machine, two laptops, midi controllers and live percussion to create their full-bodied sound.

STAGE TWO: OPTIMO PRESENT HUNG UP!

On the soon to be renamed "HOLY SHIT THEY HAVE WHO?" stage, feast your eyes upon the following...Representing the mighty Kompakt Records is Matias Aguayo, creator of 2010's incredibly infectious 'Ay Ay Ay' LP which proved that dance music didn't have to disappear up it's collective arsehole and could indeed (whisper it now) BE FUN. Who knew? Seriously though, at his appearance at Hung Up last year he held an incredibly captive audience using nothing more than CDJs, a mic and some percussion. Truly a sight to behold. Glasgow's finest export since knife crime and the golden boy of Warp Records, Hudson Mohawke follows on the bill shortly afterwards with his truly unique style and sound that refuses to be pigeonholed. Just don't call it aquakrunk. Please. The whole day is curated by the jewels in the city's clubbing crown, JD Twitch and JG Wilkes of Optimo, backed up by man of the moment Jackmaster, fresh off the back of his latest mix for the world-famous Fabric series.

STAGE THREE: THE PAMPERO RUM HOUSE

Moodymann's sound is a hybrid form of techno and house music, realised via the innovative use of reworked riffs, samples and grooves. Utilising classic soul and jazz samples, low-slung bass lines and an approach to drum programming that is diametrically opposed to the tendency to push the tempo faster and faster, he has achieved classic status thanks to gems like "Sunday Morning", "Shades of Jae", and his remix of Innerzone Orchestra's "People Make the World Go Round". Long time friend of the Sub Club and the first man to mix live on televison back in 1983, Greg Wilson joins the line-up at the Wee Chill. In 2005 Tirk Records released 'Credit to the Edit', a compilation of re-edits spanning Greg's entire career, including original tape edits from the early days. Still using his trusty old Revox B77 reel-to-reel tape machine when DJing, Greg Wilson's set are truly unique in every way. Support comes in the form of Glasgow legend Billy Woods, the mind behind Supermax, also joined by the collective Thunder Disco Club.

STAGE FOUR: THE BLACK HAND GANG STAGE

Alabama 3's "Unplugged" line-up brings a whole new dimension to the songs made famous by the group, described simply be themselves as "this isn’t acid house music, this is country/gospel/delta blues, but played with a rhythm you’ve still got to dance to." With the addition of Aurora Dawn to the line up there’s an added injection of soul to the performance that had been well recieved across the world.

Also taking to the stage are Woodenbox With A Fistful Of Fivers. Described by The Skinny as "Dubbing the collective band of stragglers 'A Fistful Of Fivers' – a reference to Ali Downer's self-proclaimed obsession with Spaghetti Westerns – Woodenbox have become a solid proposition, both in the studio and the live arena. Exhibiting several prolonged nods to the work of legendary composer Ennio Morricone – thanks in no small part to a prominent horn section – the resulting sound also pulls together elements of folk and country. From their more laidback, reflective moments to full-on barn-raising anthems, Downer’s old school storytelling style is augmented by dense harmonies."

Joining them on the stage will be Aaron Wright, The Rudiments and The Black Hand Gang.
