My festival hair is sorted as I have dreads, but they're something of a long term commitment... Pre-dreads I used to dunk my head under a tap whenever I saw a sink with absolutely no-one by it (usually early afternoon) and dry shampoo otherwise.

The hairdressing on site is provided by Vanity Van, you wash your hair yourself with solar shower over a basin and then either style yourself using their hairdryers/straightners etc or if you pay a bit extra you have have it done for you. Its near the John Peel stage. Just had a look at the prices £17 for DIY. I know there are better things to do at Glasto than washing your hair but it does make you feel so much better!!

I usually just wash it intensively the day I leave, so it has the best possible chances of looking semi-decent all weekend. I take dry shampoo and use it every morning.

I usually straighten my hair most days but I don't bother at festivals (for obvious reasons). I'm quite concerned this year though; it's my first festival season with a fringe, and a fringe which drastically relies on an everyday straightening so that it doesn't look mental. I'm wondering whether I should invest in some gas-powered straighteners (any recommendations?) or go oldschool with some bandanna's to keep it in check!

I think Argos have some for £15. I am also thinking of investing as my fringe is hideous if left to it's own devices, but then again - it is just a couple of days a year, and the bandana thing is probably much more in the Glastonbury spirit if it's a look you can carry off.

Thanks for the tip about the Braun's Bubblepop, I managed to reserve the very last one within 20 miles so was v lucky there.

I have thick wavy hair and last year I just used my solar shower every morning and left it to go curly, not really my best look so I'm really looking forward to having the straighteners to sort my wayward fringe out at the very least x

I take a round plastic Bowl (cake tin size) with a lid on, and a plastic cup, fill the bowl with cold water and wash over the bowl with the cup....hair nice and clean not very stylish but as someone else said the cold water wakes you up and your not hogging the taps..you can get flat pack water bottles from camping and pound shops so if its hot and the waterbottle has been in the tent all night its not that cold. Also I fill the bowl with toiletries to take which saves space in rucksack

  • 2 weeks later...

I haven't washed my hair at the festival the last three years and a bit of dry shampoo has done the trick, although too much does make it feel nasty! I never normally use conditioner on the last couple of washes before the festival as I find it makes my hair get greasy quicker, just some shampoo.

Think I will wash it this year. I find a bit of aussie serum on my fringe when it is still wet and a grip to help it dry in the right direction does the trick when i cant be bothered to blow dry it at home. If your hair is frizzy like mine then just put a few random twists and plaits in it while it dries and invest in a hat. You will need one to protect you from the sun anyway as I found out with a peeling parting a week after I got home last year which looked like the worst dandruff ever. Lesson learnt!

I usually wash mine a couple of times over the weekend using a couple of 2-litre bottles I fill up from the taps. Last year I found the water was actually pretty warm once I'd left it out in the sun all day, but as others have said, the cold water wakes you up anyway. I also take a collapsible bucket so I can wash my face properly - although baby wipes are fine for the rest of me, the skin on my face just cannot cope without a proper wash.

I had really long hair last year and just washed it before I left then dry shampoo'd when there. It was so bloody hot that I soon stopped caring about what it looked like and just cared about getting it away from my neck. I wore it in a side pony tail, not my usual look but it kept it out the way.

This year short hair that requires no effort, win :)

I always give my hair a good wash and deep condition the Wednesday morning and bring along some serum to give it a little care if needed then a good wash and even deeper condition on the Monday night. I have quite large curly hair so brushing would only give me the electric shock look so i tend to leave it to it's own devices. I couldn't sacrifice doing something fun for washing my hair but my hair is a bit more on the dry side and i only usually shampoo once a week anyway so quite lucky in that respect.

As long as your girlfriend considers the other festival goers around her and only uses the taps to wash hair when there is nobody about and if someone approaches to fill up drinking water she steps aside to let them then it's all good.

Edit: But don't keep the water running when not fully in use! :)

I am now practising various plaiting styles at home and still considering whether to get a french plait done before the festival. I did purchase Aussie Leave in Conditioner yesterday and will be trialling it for the next couple of weeks to see if it is any good.

I'd just plait it or put it in a ponytail really and wash it every other day when there's nobody at the taps. I have long hair at the moment but am hopefully getting it cut to more manageable length for Glasto as I can't be bothered with it.

i have fairly massive curly hair and haven't washed it at the festival for years, even with access to staff showers (i do wash the rest of me!!!)

its all too much effort i find, so i just make sure it looks ok before i leave home then use a combination of dry shampoo, bandanas and, if all else fails, a wig to keep it under control. btw wigs are very useful if its cold and wet, they double as a nice warm hat (not that it will be this year :D )

for those ladies with fringes that go to the side, i recommend wetting it just before you go to bed and then clamping it into place with kirby grips in the manner of an old lady putting her rollers in!
