Hare Krishnas

Right. So i'm poor at the moment and don't have a stove. I was thinking about just taking a load of cereal for breakfast and a load of super noodles to go, it's probably not hard to scrounge some hot water or even buy some from a coffee tent.

Then it hit me! Those amazing Hare Krishnas may be able to feed me.

Obviously i'm not gonna RELY on them, as that'd be rude. However, it would be nice to have 2 meals there.

I have a few questions however:

1) How much should i donate (is £2 a go too little?)

2) What's the food like? (Outside Marxism about 2 years ago it was pretty good!)

3) What day and when do they open?

4) Is there a big queue (is it worth having my main meal in the morning/early afternoon to avoid queues?)

I might aim to survive the festival on £50 which SHOULD support me on food, but i tend to get carried away after a few drinks so might struggle.

Gah, avoiding the nice cider's gonna be tough.

I love the Hare Krishnas, I spend happy time there every year. When I was skint and lost all my money once in the 90s (at phoenix, not glastonbury) they supported me for the rest of the festival and otherwise I would have had to go home. As with all things Hare Krishna they expected nothing more than my gratitude.

There is usually a sign put up indicating when food serving will begin (seem to recall it was 11am Thursday last year, but I have a notoriously poor memory/grip on reality) and queues can get quite large. The food is good if you like asian foods (they used to also do vegan pizza and orange cordial but these days it seems to be entirely based around a popadom and some lentil and vegetable based curry).

Donation is great if you can afford it, give as much as you feel you can afford. They will not be upset if you are unable to donate and based on the amount you are taking I would say that it is for people like yourself that it is this way.

Bender, please come to the cider bus meet on the wednesday, I would like to buy you an evening meal.

Heh, I was young and skint once.

I tried to do the same thing for Runner last year when she nearly couldn't go because of financial disaster, but never got a response to the offer. Since 2009 I have been doing the 'act of random kindness' thing, while at glastonbury, once a day, every day do something that's nicer than you'd be to strangers in the real world, step in and help when someone is in distress, give someone a packet of fags and a tenner on sunday when you discover they are down on their luck, that kind of thing. It's good for the soul and helps me feel better about myself (I've been a right cnut in the past), I've sent Bender my details to try and make it happen, hope that he/she takes me up on the offer and doesn't just think it's some scary old creep thing.

I am an avid carnavore and went in the tent last year, they gave me some vegan, lentil curry stuff and a lime chutney...it was really nice I have to admit. I was listening to that chant/song thing they do and it put me into a complete trance, granted I was a little drunk, but I literally sat mesmorised for 2 hours haha was brilliant! :)

That is the charm of the place. I took a couple of friends in '09 and they thought I was mental. I took my daughter last year and she loved it, really got into the hypnotic rhythm and we danced and smiled and sung and all that. It was brilliant, we spent some time in there most days last year.

Sometimes you can go there and its all chilled and a bit early afternoon, sometimes you can go there and the celebration is really building, everyone there is getting into it and the hare krishnas themselves are really encouraging people to get up and dance and just feel it. Alot of people get all defensive in their attitude as if they are trying to recruit them or something and that allowing yourself to just unwind and go with the flow with a bit of hypnotic rhythm and dancing is somehow wrong.

Trust me when I say that on several years Thursday evening at Hare Krishna has been banging :D

My stepdad is a hare krishna and he's never once tried to brainwash me! Well, apart from maybe the attempts to convince me that a tidy room was a good idea..

I always try and pop in each year.. Its a nice atmosphere and good food.. Yes theres chanting and worship going on but nothing that you're forced to join in with or believe.. The food is offered up to the gods before its served out to everyone and they're just happy to be passing out the love.. I'm not a believer, but I certainly don't see the harm in listening to a bit of singing and eating some blessed food, especially if its yummy and fills up my tum tum too..

They're lovely, go visit.. :)

Oh and as to the OP's questions the Hare Krishna's will see you right, donate what you can afford to donate, have fun..

I think they *want* you to go and eat there if you are in need. So go and eat with their blessing. If you really want to make their day then get up and sing that 'Hare Rama' thing. They bloody live for that, and it's all the repayment they could ever want. However, do remember not to accidentely become a Krishna person or anything. Unless you want to I suppose, that's up to you really. :)
