Money Expenditure

Just looked into the Bank of Couchy & despite scrimping & saving these past few months since finishing my job at the end of April, it's not looking great. Unfortunately due to the bad weather, my part time job at the pub has been none existent (most of the pub is outside). Biggest expenditure at the moment is travel costs (coming from Surrey/London border, 4 in a car & then train to Castle Cary for the final leg).

So just wanted to ask is there any advice on doing Glasto on the cheap. I know about the Hare Krishna's & was planning on giving them a visit (when I find out where they are based) anyway. I am taking plenty of booze with me, but less so food. I would like to get a sack trolley to bring more stuff but as it is with not much money & 4 in a small Peugeot 207, it's not going to happen.

Is there any possible work I could do at the festival, does anyone know of anyone needing a bit of help for a few hours, for a bit of beer money or food? I'm thinking that by now these rolls will have been filled (geddit?) & or most work being done by volunteers for a ticket.

Currently selling some PS3 games & my camcorder I was going to use to do a video of Glastonbury on eBay to top up the bank account, but as it is with eBay & PayPal I'm just not sure how much I'm going to get at the end of the day (something like 3.4%+20p for PayPal on each item). Going to sell my PS3 but am a bit worried as last time I sold my iPod, the buyer claimed the postman signed for the item when received & that he never got it & eBay Resolution went in his favour & refunded him on my behalf whilst I was on a field trip with no internet access. To say I was a bit miffed is an understatement.

Any help would be great, as Glastonbury is a completely different animal to the usual Readings etc.

There have been mentions that if you see a food stall if overworked at a lunch time you can maybe offer your services to help with washing up etc. in the busy times. Exchange being some food or cash I believe.

If you can convince one of your camp mates to take a gas stove and enough gas for the weekend you can live on Pasta in a Mug packs and other quick boil food stuffs. I had to resort to this most of last summer at the many fests I went to/worked at as I was properly brassic. Its amazing what yummy concoctions you can come up with just a fiver, a stove and cans and pasta sachets.

For breakfast at T with 5am starts for our work shifts from 6am we got by with unbuttered thick white bread just with lemon and garlic mayo and sweet chili sauce inside. Sounds weird but was actually really yummy :D

Bananas, tortilla wraps and peanut butter are good for brekkie too, better actually and a fair bit of energy food for you.

Food - keeping this cheap is a very good idea. One pot noodle cup with another 5 or so emptied into lunch bags does well. Anythin that fills you up bascically.

if you can take/borrow cash then you can stay on site to help clean-up afterwards. Ask the litter crews as soon as you get there or go to the recycling centre.

they pay a basic wage plus food and I hear a bit of a laugh too

I take it you have all your camping kit.

You can do it very cheaply, plan it in advance

Supermarket own brand noodles cost about 11p a packet, ditto with rice, pasta etc.

Pretty sure you could survive well for the whole week on a carrier bag of that stuff for about a fiver.

Get a stainless steel flask (no glass to break) and you can carry hot food away from the tent or save it for when you get back mashed up and too knackered to cook.

It's a pain having to tear yourself away from the fun to cook up something to eat but if needs must !

It's just an idea, but try asking at the stalls whilst your there if they need any help for an hour in exchange for food/cash in hand.

I was extra cheeky last year - everytime I bought food I mentioned how I was "amazed my money had stretched this far" (which I was, being unemployed at the time). Most people threw in a free extra or a bit of a discount for me. A lovely old man by the Pyramid gave me a free cuppa and slice of cake every day - if you go to the right people they can be incredibly generous.

I'm asking round my mates to see if they'd like to buy any of my items, save being ripped off with eBay.

I am very good with money... until I have a few then I kind go "f it, I want to have a good time".

I really don't want to be watching my pennies at a festival, it kind of ruined a Reading one year. That & the bands were sh*te.

Big bag of cheap cornflakes (or similar) and either take UHT or buy milk on site. Not amazingly exciting, but will keep you going for two out of three meals a day and snacks.

If you can get access to a stove, a big bag of pasta shells is VERY cheap. Various ways to get cheap sauce. Some of those cans of bolognaise sauce in a tin aren't THAT bad and very lacking in hassle.

I've found a sack trolley in the garage! Hasn't got pumped up tyres but they are big rubbery ones. Get in, get down!

I shall now see if it can fit in the said car, probably best underneath all the gear. Can now think about taking more food as I can put booze on the trolley! I am planning to use cellophane wrap to secure the gear.

If you can't borrow a stove, take a look at http://zenstoves.net/LowPressure.htm

There are other other type of stoves on that site, but these are the easiest and don't require any stand.

If you need something to heat your water in try http://zenstoves.net/CanPots.htm (though you can pick up billys in poundland).

Meths will set you back about £2.75 for 500ml. Add stack loads of instant noodles, and at least you won't starve. :)
