Is there transport out of festival into town during festival?

We are looking at getting to Glastonbury late Tuesday evening and want to explore the surrounding villages/town on the Wednesday. Do they have shuttle buses etc to get you out and back if you fancy leaving for bit?

There doesn't look like there is much happening on the Wednesday so will be bored if just hanging around

I believe there is some transport, but Wednesday is not the best day to travel. Last year the roads were heaving with traffic from 7am til gone 5pm (it took 6 hours to drive the 20 miles from the M5 through Glastonbury town and to the festival), and you don't want to get stuck in that.

There is plenty to do on site, lots of the smaller bars are open, as is the market, and it is great fun just exploring the site. Glastonbury is the size of a small town, so there is a lot to explore.

Wednesday is the best day! Well, its up there with Thursday, while the festival isn't yet in full swing, there is certainly a lot more to do there than there is in the surrounding area.

Put it this way, I've never known anyone want to leave the site, at any point, its also virtually impossible to be bored,

Glastonbury Festival IS NOT ABOUT THE MUSIC...its about the experience.

Are you seriously telling me that you could get bored in a city the size of Bath with a thousand diversions, shops/stalls to visit, restaurants to eat at, bars to drink at, sights to see, hills to climb, stone dragons to find, foot massages to be had, endless cups of tea to be drunk, a meet with hundreds of Efestival people at a certain bus from 6pm?

If you want to visit the local area, get down early on Tuesday, mooch around G Town, pop over to Street to buy some Heck's cider, climb the Tor, come to the Rifleman's pub in the evening then head to the carparks from midnight.

Wednesday? Boring? ITS THE BEST BLOODY DAY!!! Its the first of 5 days of insanity. :D:D:D

Even at bog standard festivals I like having an extra day to just chill out and have a few drinks with my mates, at G this is even better coz of all the extra stuff there is to do. Its nice to just have a day to wander around randomly before everyone starts rushing around trying to see bands

I agree with everyone else.

However if you insist on leaving the site there is a shuttle bus which costs about £3 -4 return if I remember correctly. I was forced to leave the site due to losing my cash card and having to find a local Barclay's to withdraw my money. The bus was hourly so it took almost 3 hours out my day!!! Never again. There is a Morrison's though for stocking up on booze. :)

There is a shuttle bus every hour into Glastonbury town from the festival bus station, £3 return if i remember correctly. But the traffic is usually really bad on Wednesday so you may end up spending the day in traffic.

To backup what has been said here, Wednesday is probably my favourite day. The site is virtually complete and while none of the big stages are on there is still so much to do and see. Markets for browsing, bars for drinking, music on in various places, food to sample etc. A day to grab a few cans and go wondering around, no plans, just see what you find.

Also the site is a lot quieter on Wednesday (people wise) so you can get around without the crush that sometimes develops over the weekend. There is also a very nice buzz of excitement in the air, everyone around you is just happy they are there, fantastic atmosphere come ra1n or shine. A nice day to slide gently into the relaxing atmosphere.

I'm not going to tell you what you shouldn't choose to do.

However, I am going to tell you that getting off site, and getting back again, will be a Mission. It will tire you out. It will not be fun.

Listen to these people!

Wednesday is definitely the best day.......not just of the festival but possibly the whole year!

Seriously, my advice would be stay on site. Although there are buses the traffic will be a nightmare and you'd be joining the hoards of people making their way to the festival on your return journey.

As people have already said, there's loads to see and do and it's also a great opportunity to familiarise yourself with the site and get used to the distance between stages etc.

Anyway, whatever you choose to do there's only one rule..........enjoy it!! :-)

My son had previously said something similar, that he wouldn't want to go until Friday morning because, and I quote: I will get bored just sat around looking at fields with a bunch of hippies.

Now I could point out that that seems like a rather skewed view of glastonbury to me, but one thing I have learned lately is that some people seem to have a VERY skewed opinion and are judging accordingly. If you go to glastonbury town you are going to get, at best, wandering around the shops, maybe somewhere you might sit and have a cup of tea or a pint if that is more your thing and I suppose looking at the local architecture. Now the good news is that you can do ALL of that there onsite, in a much more interesting manner and still be free the other 360 days of the year to visit glastonbury town.

There is more to see at glastonbury than there is time to catch it all.

Bored? You are joking? Wednesday is the best day, and as I'm assuming you haven't been there before, there really won't be enough hours in the day for all the things you can do or see. Really, once you are pitched, the last thing that you will want to do is leave the 1000 acre site!!

It would be easy to assume, based on listings of acts, that there's not much going on on Wednesday.

And, of course, you might - not unreasonably - assume me and the posters above are weirdo obsessives who'd be entertained by a mere blade of the farm's grass (well, I would be, but let's not get into that).

Truth is, you'll be able to make your own mind up. Get pitched on Wednesday then see what there is to offer. There's very very very little chance you'll want to leave. Some newbie friends of mine came last year, had never been to a festival before. After they'd got past the stress (and it is a stress) of getting in, they were gutted to have to leave to pick their kids up from school. Gutted. They even debated how to offload the children on to relatives so they could stay :)
