It's very definitely a PR scam. They're not really closing the NoTW, they're rebranding it as The Sun.

Murdoch won't be any less powerful for this, he won't lose a large amount of money (if any), hopefully though this whole affair will open some eyes to the true power the media has politically.

How to win applause from trendy lefties - slag off The Sun or NoW - preferably without reading either paper but by basing your prejudices on the views of other trendy lefties.

I'm no lover of Murdoch or his politics but I think people should be clear that the phone hacking allegations all relate to a period of five or more years ago when Rebecca Wade was at the helm. Since then a completely new team of pretty decent journos have been running the NoW.

What offends me is that those people are paying the price and losing their jobs while Rebecca stays on and Rupert goes laughing all the way to the bank.

I admit I don't read either very often. Usually if I'm on a train or in a waiting room and there's one lying around. But whenever I have picked up one (and its not just them, all the tabloids are as bad and I am lumping them all in together) its been full of the worst shit you can read. Celeb 'stories', anti pc and health and safety gone mad campaigns, outright racism, made up health scare stories, churnalism (although the broadsheets are almost as bad for this one) and terrible hypocrisy.

As for the people losing their jobs. I had a little sympathy for them, until I remembered that they'd chosen to work for the News of the World.
