Of more concern is the flooding in Dorest today. Does anyone know if it's affected the site?

Turning to the long-range forecast....

It's a long way off yet so it's not worth checking those '14 day gizmos' they simply upload data from long-range forecasting models and make a generalisation about the potential conditions. The forecast on those things will vary from day to day until we hit the reliable forecasting timeframe in a week's time. Even the BBC 5 day ones are pretty worthless.

However, the models are showing signs of a change in the current set-up by the end of the month with High Pressure building to the South of us. If it comes off it means we'll have settled but not exactly scorching weather. Which would be good.

I'll be keeping an eye on developments.

I know IJ. I wanted to post something "happy" last night as it is only 2 weeks to go. But, after hearing the news yesterday evening, getting excited about EoTR just seemed impossible.

I remember a storm like that when I was a child, have a pic of me holding a hailstone the size of a golf ball. It caused so much damage and was terrifying. Totally unexpected as well for the time of year.

I understand that the Smith Westerns were playing on the stage that collapsed and Dry The River were backstage waiting to perform. Both bands are ok.

Skunk Anansie were on the main stage when it happened. Really scary. I went to the pukkelpop 2 years ago and it's a great (big) festival. Such a shame that this happened. I still have a lot of friends who go there and they're all fine. I'm sincerely shocked. It could happen anywhere, at the EOTR, considering the amount of trees and all, it could be devastating.

Sad news indeed. It's exactly the same circumstances as the disaster in the US at the weekend: a violent downdraft from a developing Thunderstorm. People always think that lightning is the most dangerous aspect of storms but this goes to show that event organisers need to be aware of other risks. There was that art installation in County Durham a few years back which was simply picked and tossed around in the sky killing two people.

These winds are very difficult to forecast too. Downdrafts are highly localised and don't always occur in a storm. I think the solution may be to have a weather expert at outdoor events in future, someone who can assess such risks. That said, in my experience of working at festivals, pulling a band, even for 10 minutes, for Health and Safety reasons can prove very unpopular.

there was a minor collapse at the small sunrise stage at Latitude a couple of years ago, without any weather involvement. Dreadful business in Belgium. On the subject of this thread however ,the EOTR weather predictions seems to be http://www.accuweather.com/ukie/forecast3.asp?partner=accuweather&traveler=0&postalcode=SP1%201AA&metric=1getting better

bbc update:

Monday 29 August 2011 to Sunday 4 September 2011

Sunshine for some to start September

As August comes to a close the weather might well take a turn for southern parts of the UK in particular.

High pressure will try to build from the south, bringing some drier and settled weather here. This is likely to see temperatures at times becoming warmer than average during the day but turning rather cool at night - a pattern that often leads to mist and fog forming and lingering well into the morning.
