sifi
In the winter, sure. Having said that, I was over there in the last week of October last year, and it was still very hot.

Yoghurt on a Stick
If it's the UK you're moving back to after the 5 years then you could consider Brighton. It doesn't tick all your boxes outright, but what place will.
Ed209
Couldn't live in Australia, I'm afraid - unless there has been a massive change in mindset's over there, I couldn't handle the lack of decent bookshops.
The Nal
Beautiful country but it's a bit of a cultural waste-land. Plus a lot of people in Australia still have some fairly draconian views when it comes to race.

Ed209
Every Aussie I have ever met has said it's the most bigoted place in the world you only have to watch Home & Away and Neighbours to see it's only white folk. I use to work with an Asian/Aussie girl who left as people use to constantly give her shit for being a girl and not being white.
feral chile
I'd live where I live now. I have a lovely walk to the shops, past the park and through the castle grounds. It's a 15 minute train ride to the nearest city, yet we're a small rural town surrounded by hills. It's nice and chilled, but if you want something a bit more lively, it's easy to get there. I love it here.

sifi
Why do we have different names for other countries? Always confuses me. It's like some one introducing themselves as Nigel and then you calling them Neil all evening.

Katster
but my name is Tony... wherever I am.. it doesn't get translated. There are equivalent names (Anthony, Antonio, Antoine, etc..), but that's different to changing it. I'm with Sifi... it's not hard to call Paris the way the french call it, is it, or most other town's or country's names. One weird example is the port in Holland, called Vlissingen. When I sold tickets for the ferry whenI worked in a travel agency, Vlissingen became Flushing... .. why? and Holland, there's another one.. Netherlands, Pay-bas... what is it? Katster
We partly chose Nadine as a name for our 2nd daughter thinking it might be easy to pronounce (Martina - our first - was easy ) by my wife's family... I never realised.. Nadeenay is how it comes out. It seems to be almost impossible for Italians to end a word on a consonant (which might be why names get 'translated'..?) kind of sweet anyhow
Bisque
London -whilst I'm young Hong Kong -for a year Bath -such a nice place Although I have loved growing up in Elmbridge, Surrey. Excellent schools, close to London, half decent nightlife (Guildford, Woking, Kingston & London) etc I've decided the people who live here can be a bit arsey. LusciousLucy
I think Holland is only one of the Netherlands and so the Netherlands is the official and correct name for the country, although that might be the other way around. Tarring a whole country with the racism brush is going a bit far with Australia, its like saying every American is stupid and fat when they aren't. I lived long enough in the country to be aware that there is certainly bigotry about but not every single inhabitant and many are often put in their place when they talk out of line/stupidly. It IS a country created on chauvinism sadly though. And as for decent bookshops...the big cities are loaded with them. My only personal gripe with Australia is its very American style of living. Seriously crap telly and the food is mostly by Kraft. And for some reason the Aussies dont really go in for pork sausages. Chicken and beef instead...wtf???!!! I'm learning how to do my own charcuterie and sausage making when I settle there and going to have my own pigs along with a cider apple orchard and press.
