Sziget 2012

In spite of the fact that The Killers really don't flick our switches, I've still gotta say that the line up seems to shaping up nicely - and it looks as if there's at least 2 headliners plus a lot more else to announce! :)

The Rock Werchter line-up is insane indeed, it always is, but they have line-up for only three stages and nothing else than that. Besides those three stages it is a really dull festival. Sziget is much more of an experience, like the little boutique festivals, where many people come to regardless of what acts are playing the festival.

I've been to Sziget in the past four years and have seen how always a small minority of people (most of them visiting Sziget for the first time) has been complaining about line-up in these years too. At Sziget I've met plenty who were very critical about the line-up during the first days, but at the end of the festival they always said they had the best week of the year, while some even say it was the best year of their life! I've even heard quite many stories of people coming to Sziget to see one band in particular, but in the end missing that band because they discovered a great unknown band or DJ at one of the smaller stages or simply because they where having fun in some other way. Sziget is a discovery and if you book tickets you'll certainly not regret it at the end of the festival.

Last year too I've seen quite some complaints about line-up during this time of the year. One of the reasons was the lack of big headliners. But after The Prodigy was announced in June and Prince in July, most where happy with what many considered the best Sziget line-up ever. But still, since many come to Sziget for the experience, many considered this great line-up not really important, as they would have had a great festival without the big headliners too. I think the average must see acts people have at Sziget is about three-four for the whole week, for the rest it's much more fun to just see what you come across. Most people with more must sees on their lists are newcomers, but they learn how to experience Sziget soon.

But even though the line-up doesn't really matter that much to me, I like the speculations beforehand. When comparing the line-up of this year with the one of last year at this time, I think it's shaping up to be about just as good as last year. Last year the two biggest acts (The Prodigy and Prince) were announced in June and July. That could happen again this year.

Last year at this time The Maccabees were just a minor upcoming band and so they played a very early slot at Sziget. After the summer they have been hyped and I can understand you surely want to see them now, but I doubt you would've said the same last year at this time. At this moment I think the line-up contains plenty of upcoming bands that have the same potential as The Maccabees.

In my opinion Pulp headlining can be compared with The Stone Roses headlining, where in my opinion The Stone Roses are even a bit better. Of course it's great for you that you're seeing The Stone Roses in Heaton Park, but you can't blame the Sziget organisers for booking a band that you already see. For many others, me included, The Stone Roses is a great name.

For the non-headlining acts Kasabian, Manics and The National, I think The XX is of about the same level and Paolo too. As there still are more acts to come, I do expect some more co-headliners that can compete with these acts.

From the 2012 Party Arena line-up we haven't seen much yet. Axwell and Steve Aoki are the only DJs of the Party Arena night programme that have been announced thus far, so there are still many slots left for other DJs. There'll surely be some DJs that you'll like there, like 2manydj's and Above & Beyond last year.

Placebo and The Killers may not be your kind of act, but don't you think the same about 30 Seconds To Mars who were headlining last year? And what about White Lies as a headliner? The Killers and Placebo both aren't my kind of act too, but still I think they are already much better than White Lies and 30 Seconds To Mars. At least The Killers and Placebo certainly are major acts in the festival circuit. On the other hand I can agree that Korn is not as good as Chemical Brothers, although I found the Chemical Brothers rather boring because I had seen them before twice and I am quite curious for Korn. Not sure if I'm going to watch them though, at Sziget you never know what else you might wanna do at the time of a certain gig... ;)

Where Foos, Justice and Jack White are? Performing in San Francisco at the time of Sziget... And I believe RHCP, Björk and The Black Keys can be ruled out too because of their tour schedule. Some of the other acts would be possible, but it's always hard to predict what acts Sziget will announce. Last year The Prodigy and Prince came as a huge surprise too.

But enough about line-up now. It'll be a great week no matter what the line-up is like. Sziget is so much more than line-up.

tbh i know its about personal taste but i dont see what the problem is, the lineup to this festival is better than most in the uk this year, for me this years lineup is better than last years the bands n djs are great! im seeing the stone roses at heaton park, T in the park and sziget, who cares if you like the band whats the bother? apart from i do wish i hadnt have forked out so much for the manchester gig haha

i got my flights from london for 133quid, festival ticket inc camping is 165quid, thats 300quid total for a SEVEN day festival ticket with 5-6 headliners, plus from what ive heard its a great experiance im treating it just as much a holiday as a festival, and with beers costing £1.50 and food at only £3, its cheep as fuck!

i must admit rockwerchters line up is great this year, but all of them bar RHCP, pearl jam, n blink, are playing festivals in the uk either at Tin the park or Readin/Leeds, but RHCP + Blink are both playing gigs in the uk this year, so your not gettin much extra,

im gettin my ticket because its basicly the only festival KoRn are playing this year, placebo was a good pull and the rest of the lineup is great too, plus the experiance n cheep alcohol, WIN!!

Even with flights and accomodation it's a bloody bargain.

You'd probably end up paying similar to camp in a muddy field in the UK and get piss thrown over you.

It's a no brainer, regardless of lineup.

We worked out that to take the van to the IOW festival would cost us about £500 in tickets alone - and then there's another £200 or so for the ferry and then the cost of diesel to get down there (needless to say - we're not going!) - and then it could rain all weekend - so, really, what with the lower costs and the guaranteed better weather, sziget is a no brainer! ;)

Out of the headliners, off the top of my head, I'd say we'll be going to see KoRn, Placebo and The Pogues - and there's a few bands on the undercard that stand out - but I agree with Cristall - you don't want too many 'must sees' on your 'to do list', otherwise you don't have time to go with the flow and enjoy the festival vibe.

We drove last year, and planning to this year.

Campervan area is better than average UK festival. Hook up available and close to showers. Also not barriered off like most festivals, i.e. Glastonbury. You can walk from the van to stages etc with no gates/security. Less than 10 min walk to Metal Stage.

I am getting very excited!! So far, there aren't the same amount of bands that I knew right away I'd like to see compared to last year. However the Spotify playlists are amazing and I have another 5 at least now that I definitely want to make it along to. I am really enjoying all the bands with brass sections, such good music to have on a summer's day at a festival!

In my opinion, what UK attendees have to remember is that, although the UK is clearly a big player on the world stage when it comes to music and a ridiculous amount of the acts announced so far are British, the Sziget organisers won't have British tastes at the forefront of their mind when they're booking, and neither should they. One look at that "flag corridor" last year representing all the countries with citizens at Sziget was amazing, and I went the whole week last year hearing a fellow British accent about twice (and seeing a Celtic top once!) I'm sure it will be different this year because of Glastonbury not being on but the organisers are far more likely to be catering to Dutch or Hungarian tastes which might make the line up or the billing of some acts seem a little odd to us :) But it will still be the best week of the year anyway!!

I went to Benicassim once and the reason I never went back was because it was full of brits.

I dread to think whats its going to be like this year with The Stone Roses, Noel Gallagher, Florence etc. Like a package holiday no doubt.
