Hi all

It's one of my best mate's 40th soon and him being really into his music was thinking of a few music related biographies/autobiographies.

Had a few thoughts of my own based on some that I've read myself but thought would canvas thoughts of my fellow e-festers

Cheers

Reading Chuck Berrys autobiography at the moment. Excellent and he wrote it himself. No ghost writer.

Cash by Johnny Cash is a masterpiece.

The RatPack by Shawn Levy is the "coolest" read out there.

No One Here Gets Out Here Alive by Jerry Hopkins about Jim Morrison may be the best rock and roll book I've read.

All Yesterdays Parties about The Velvet Underground is great.

Jerry Lee Lewis Lost and Found by Joe Bonomo is the best book ive read about The Killer. A unique evil genius.

The Record Men by Rich Cohen, story of Chess Records. Superb.

Shakey by Jimmy McDonough about Neil Young is the definitive Neiler book out there.

These Beatles books are essential....

PaulMcCartney Many Years From Now by Barry Miles. Only official Macca bio.

Lennon in America by Geoffrey Giuliano. VERY controversial. Based on the lost Lennon diaries.

And Revolution in the Head by Ian McDonald is the best music book ever written. His essay "Fabled Foursome, Disappearing Decade" should be required reading by law for everyone before they turn 16.

Not a biog or autobiog but a great series of reference books that tell a lot about the history and development of rock are the Rock Family Trees books by Pete Frame. All based on interviews and conversations with those who were there so as good as many a biog and a fascinating read.

Have a look at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rock-Family-Trees-Development-2v/dp/0711904650
