The Killers Rumour?

Whilst I agree with that, you could also agrue that Reading gets to pick rock acts that V couldn't like Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Blink 182, Metallica, System of A Down, Slipknot, etc. All played Reading and not V and I doubt they would. MAYBE at a push Blink and Pearl Jam could and maybe Smashing Pumpkins but not as headliner.

I'm pretty sure he means that if smashing pumpkins headlined V, everyone would be saying who are they? which is a far comment to be fair, i think they'd have a ridiculously small crowd at V if the crowd from this year is anything to go by. I think Blink could play there but it wouldn't be high on the lineup. It's such a weird festival these days

The Killers are a mediocre radio friendly unit shifter, living off the reputation of an overrated debut and each successive album has headed closer towards mainstream pop territory.

They would be an incredibly lazy and predictable booking, but would be very popular with children and listeners of Radio 1.

Unfortunately, for these reasons, I expect to see headlining in 2012

In the 16 years V has been going R&L has had six bands (Blur, Metallica, Foos, Muse, RHCP and the Manics) headline more than once, nine if you include GNR, Pulp and The Strokes (one and a half each).

V probably gets a bad rep regarding repeats becase RHCP and The Killers were only two years apart and that's never happened at R&L while Muse and Oasis were four years apart and that probably gets remembered as it was relatively recently. Foos (three years apart) and Blur and the Manics (four years apart) were a longer time ago at R&L so tend to get forgotten.

Also as someone else said over that period V have had to find 32 headliners while R&L has had to find 48.

I'd also like to defend Reading and Leeds. I mean yes they repeat headliners more than Glastonbury and V, But compared to download they are angels. 43% of bands that have headlined download festival (not monsters of rock included) have played more than once. This is even over a 10 year period

2003: Iron Maiden Audio slave

2004: Linkin park: Metallica

2005: Feeder Black Sabbeth SOAD

2006: Tool Metallica GnR

2007: Mcr linkin park Iron Maiden

2008: Kiss the offspring lostprophets

2009: Faith no more Slipknot Def Leppard

2010 AC/DC Rage Against The machine Aerosmith

2011: Def Leppard SOAD Linkin Park

2012 The Prodigy Metallica Black Sabbath

In 10 years: Linkin park x3 Metallica x3, Soad x2 Iron Maiden x2 Def Leppard x2 (2 year gap!) Black Sabbeth X2

12 out of 28= 43% of headliners are repeats

So yeah, readings Really not that bad...

Actually i'm going to extend this argument and compare Reading to Download and To V, and show that reading is miles better than download at not repeating, but only slightly worse than V

§ 2011: My Chemical Romance, The Strokes, Pulp, Muse

§ 2010: Guns N' Roses, Arcade Fire, Blink-182

§ 2009: Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead

§ 2008: Rage Against The Machine, The Killers, Metallica

§ 2007: Razorlight, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins

§ 2006: Franz Ferdinand, Muse, Pearl Jam

§ 2005: Pixies, Foo Fighters, Iron Maiden

§ 2004: The Darkness, The White Stripes, Green Day

§ 2003: Linkin Park, Blur, Metallica

Muse x2, Metallica X2 4/30 = 0.13%

Download= 0.43%

§ Extend the list to compare with V

2002: The Strokes, Foo Fighters, Guns N' Roses (Leeds only), The Prodigy

§ 2001: Travis, Manic Street Preachers, Eminem

§ 2000: Oasis, Pulp, Stereophonics

§ 1999: The Charlatans, Blur, Red Hot Chili Peppers

§ 1998: Jimmy Page & Robert Plant, Beastie Boys, Garbage

§ 1997: Suede, Manic Street Preachers, Metallica

§ 1996: The Prodigy, Black Grape, The Stone Roses

Metallica x3 Muse x2 prodigy x 2 Manic street preachers x2 Blur x2 Foo Fighters x2 RHCP x2 The strokes x2 Pulp x2 (were ignoring Gnr as they’ve only headlined leeds twice- but accepting prodigy instead obvs) = 19 16x 3 (+plup for this year) = 49 headliners

19/49= 0.39

V festival looks like this

Oasis, The Killers, The Verve, RHCP and Muse all played twice= 10. 16-v fests (ignoring 2012) means 32 headliners 10/32= 31%

SO if you look at it, reading is only 8% worse at repeating headliners than V festival...

It works both ways, there are bands that the Download crowd would accept as headliners that R&L would never have on. But I agree that the swing is more in R&L's favour as Download has more of a specific target audience.
