Talking Turkey

I'm trying to talk my other half out of a trad xmas dinner this year. Yes Neil, I know you're happy to cook it. :)

For years we've done the roast and all the trimmings but I really don't fancy it this year. I'm not the greatest cook, t'other half's not bad though, I just think he needs a challenge. :P

Anyone having an alternative to a dry turkey ? ( Oooh err, not a euphemism :O )

What are your festive culinary plans that we might nick ?

Previous years we have made a large pot of soup and had some of that, prepare the day before. Never really wanted to bother with all the cooking and stuff just wanted to get on with the day. We always get a trad dinner when at the in laws or my folks.

This year we have the in laws around (normally have it just the 4 of us) and my son wants a full roast so not sure what it will be but not Turkey

How about Japanese?

they have a bit of a weird xmas tradition. In the 70s and 80s, KFC was one of the few places foreigners could get a roasted chicken for Christmas Dinner, and so KFC began marketing a Christmas Dinner Meal with wine, it's now part of their tradiotion, people can “reserve” full meals months in advance to ensure they enjoy the “traditional Christmas meal” of Japan. Which is:

quality! :turkey:

Apparently your supposed to keep basting the turkey rather than banging it in the oven and leaving it for the required length of time. This is supposed to stop it drying out. Just thought I'd share the only bit of culinary knowledge I have.

On the swan front, one of my mates wrote to the Queen asking her permission for him to kill a swan so that he could 'swan up' on Xmas Day while she was giving her speech to the Commonwealth. A Major Charlie Farnes Barnes (or similar sounding) wrote back to him on the Queens behalf to indicate that the Queens authority only extended to swans in the Thames area. However he went on to say that, if cought, he would be prosecuted under other acts - can't remember which now.

I'm going to cook a turkey in honey and Guinness this year.. on the dry thing most of the fatty deposits are in the base so if you cook the turkey upside-down to start with the fat runs through and keeps it moist, then turn at the end and remove the foil to make the skin crisp
