Haven't watched the video but he looks like a standard Ugandan leader to me. No different to Amin or Obote. Mass murder, mass rape, torture, execution and cannabilism have been a part of Uganda since the dawn of time and continues to be so.

The video is intended to make him famous, to get him out?

Idi Amin - sorry - "His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Seas and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular" made himself famous and the international community did fuck all about it. Not sure what can be done? Its so tribal and fucked up there, throw in the mad religious stuff too, and nobody really knows whats going on unfortunately.

Africa is an unbelievable shithole. Sadly. If this guy leaves, some other nutter will replace him.

isn't it an odd assumption to make, that once everyone knows who he is, the rest of the world will do something to get rid of him?

and not sure about the over-emotive use of his own son

not to mention telling him (his son, Gavin) that Kony's aids aren't bad people, but good people made to do bad things...

They're not assumptions, they're true and the point still stands, but sure, sorry, hes the leader of a terrorist organisation, granted, not Uganda. The current leader of Uganda is the guy whos been in power for 26 years, who uses child soldiers, who was an aggressor in a war that killed 6 million and wants to introduce the death penalty for homosexuality.

Much nicer guy. We should totally ignore him.

This video is almost the viral version of the gel bracelets people wear for AIDS and Making Poverty History. Utterly pointless. Good that people know something now that they didn't before about a terrorist group who are clearly bad but the reasons behind, like everything, it are far deeper and cant be ignored.

Not being cynical, just being realistic.

Good article here in The Independent.

The video is asking for money/training/equipment to be given to the Ugandan military from a result of our actions. Helping to train and arm the Ugandan military? Not a chance I'm doing anything to support that initiative I'm afraid, as well intended as it is, its madness and the reason why the UK and Ireland, including lots of others, have made cut backs in non humanitarian aid to Uganda in the last few years.

This is one mad guerilla leader in a continent full of mad guerilla leaders doing the same extent of damage, if not more.

Also, Isn't your man in the video solely taking this out on Kony due to the direct effect it had on his friend? That's like a family member being murdered then starting a media campaign for the death penalty to be brought back so you can extract vengeance.

you're right... I didn't need to be so mean

I spent part of yesterday trying to explain to my daughter how things aren't usually as they seem. She's at Uni, and a ton of her mates are all over this.. it's like a fashionable event in the name of torture, it's too weird... "oooh look we can all go out one night - flash-mob style - get a bit out of it, make a party of it, postering the town... we've been told what it's about and that's enough for us"

spreading half stories and perpetuating (in effect) the ignorance that is as much at the heart of many problems as anything, is a backward step

The solution to helping Africa isn't to give them more guns... Its to help them bring their economies and social development up to scratch. Cancel the debt, create healthy and fair trade links and so on.

It's far far more needed than that. All that does is ensure the same conditions for the next Kony.

We need to stop taking the piss by enslaving them. The world's financial system is designed to continue slavery, just by another means. That's not something which has happened by chance.

The African leaders need to be given a slap on the wrists though. "Our" (the West/Whitemans) knowledge of sub Saharan Africa is limited at best. Some of the "leaders" they have had and still have are evil tyrants who treat the countries like their own little dogs. People in power for 25+ years. Madness. And the 1st world leaders tolerating it?

The west treats Africa like dogs. What happens off the back of that doesn't take a lot of imagination. ;)

There's little point swapping one set of poodles of the west with another, unless we address the reasons why those tyrants are able to build a cabal around them to then tyrannise their own peoples.

Once upon a time someone decided that the work efforts of someone in the 'civilised' world was worth far more than the work efforts of people in Africa (and other places too). It used to be done via force and called slavery, while now it's done using the force of money and is considered rightful and just capitalism by almost everyone. It's a crock of shit, and all of the problems stem from that and nothing else.

the 'comments' after many of the articles I've found would be hilarious if it wasn't for how ignorant it shows people

"why hasn't the UN stormed Africa to kill Kony yet, stupid governments, can't fix a problem when it raises it's head, a continual carpet bombing strike force & resource blockages would kill his army completely and if there were any survivors every country could surround Africa and slowly move in until all insurgents were anihalated"

I like the way that "bloggers use the Charity Navigator website to provide information to attack IC. That site rates them overall at 51%. A quick look showi that they only rate the American Red Cross at 62%. The CEO's say themselves a salary of $88,000 each. Oh look the CEO of the American Red Cross is paid $995,000 but no one bats am eyelid at that.

I have no real position in the argument but I would prefer to see information put into a context.
