kaosmark2
Not particularly, I'm pretty indifferent to them, but think it's wrong for acts to be "penalised" for playing more intimate venues when it rewards the fans more. I don't think venue size is the only thing which is used to judge whether a band can play a certain position though.
Justiceforcedave
Absolutely. QOTSA have never played a venue larger than an Academy over here. People don't question their status as subs. Edited June 19, 2012 by Justiceforcedave
kaosmark2
Maybe they could scrape a sub slot or NME headliner, I just don't think they'll ever headline unless they're latest album smashes it (which I don't think it will) (Refering to Bloc Party again btw)
Justiceforcedave
They were worthy subs before splitting, have maintained most of their fanbase and haven't played any festival in 3 years. It just bemuses me that people think anyone suggesting they're sub-size pushing headline is considered a delusional fan.
MAD HARRY 27
I'm off to see them tomorrow at the HMV Ritz, I think it's ABOUT a 2k venue? I'll be sure to report back on wether they deserve a headline slot! People do have to take into consideration the speed at which these shows sell out too, Bloc sold out in a couple of hours at most and depending on the reception of the next album I bet they could play to a 4/5ths full Manchester Apollo too
Gucci Piggy
I'm pretty sure when my brother saw them on their last academy tour it didn't sell out very fast.
sjseabass
I looked at the venues Bloc Party have been announced for, and my second reaction was 'they'll barely be able to play third at Reading based on that' (my first reaction being 'awwwww, they're not playing Cardiff'). But then, these are the sort of venues they played on their last tour, and, in total, on that tour, they played to over 60,000 people. With the exception of Florence, it's certainly comparable to all the bands who have subbed in the last three years... Headlining has to be out of the question though. Struggling to figure out who will be the 'indie' headliner next year...probably the Killers I guess. Vieuphoria
Doesn't need to be an "Indie" headliner. But my guess is... The Prodigy Biffy Clyro Blur Seems like a easy/solid bet.
Regular Chris
Seriously need the smashing pumpkins back. Oceania is excellent definately Billy's best work since Adore. With him appearing to have a new energy based on the festival gig videos they did a little back. Would make an excellent sub or NME headliner if Billy's ego could handle that
Gucci Piggy
I reckon The Killers and Biffy are the most likely at the moment. Although I also think they'll both headline TITP. Would both festivals share two headliners?
Vieuphoria
To be honest I don't really mind who headlines next year. This is my last year at Reading

Chinaski_
I'm surprised no one's talking up Jack White as a potential headliner. Yeah he's not playing arenas, but Hammersmith and Brixton are hardly tiny venues and he sold them out pretty quickly. He's also headlining Roskilde, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Sasquatch, Eurockeennes and Splendor in the Grass this summer, so he'd be a seasoned headliner by next year. Justiceforcedave
I was only going this year because a friend of mine was supposed to be playing + The Cure and last year I only went on Sat and Sun as a friend sold me 2 weekend tickets for £25 each. Unless the line up is must see next year (which purely from my perspective it probably won't be) I reckon this is going to be my last Reading! I don't think the lineups have necessarily got worse and worse, just that my tastes have changes, I've seen a lot of bands on the festival circuits and the older bands I like don't get booked as much. Cest la vie!

Gucci Piggy
Suppose, but that's what I expect at the moment. Chuck in a few older bands who are on the circuit when the festival comes round, obviously it's harder to predict those.

Gucci Piggy
It's normally the older bands that are easier to predict as they are the ones with new albums to promote.
jump
Oh yeah, when it's closer to the festival they're easier, but over a year in advance it's not normally clear which older bands will be releasing albums/reforming. Whereas with current bands it's easy to assume they'll be releasing a new album every two years or so.
Gucci Piggy
Not really Rage, Blink, Refused, Stone Roses etc reforms were known before they were announced and you can tell who will have an album out as more established/older bands make it known they are recording a new album which takes a while to do.
jump
Yeah but The Stone Roses weren't known in June 2011, which is what I was trying to say. I'm not sure about the other two as I wasn't seriously following music at that point. And I was more talking about smaller bands such as At the Drive-In, who we didn't know were reforming this time last year.
MAD HARRY 27
I think you're being incredibly pedantic. The fact is that Will's unsure what older bands could possibly be on the line-up next year, it's not really an issue to have an argument about is it?
