Really? Alive, Even Flow, Jeremy? Pretty well known songs. I know they wouldn't be for the younger crowd, you never know some young people probably like them, but their fans would buy tickets so it wouldn't matter about the age, and as I said, put some current band on the NME for the people who don't want to see PJ. Like this year they have The Cure or The Maccabees, or Arcade Fire and Pendulum, Radiohead and Lostprophets etc.

I can yeah why not.

If course they can, I can not see an argument to rule it out. Its not like theres loads of potential headliners around at the minute but they are one.

People on here been talking about biffy, blur, linkin park, bloc party, qotsa and not many more.

Exactly. Ignoring PJ as potential R/L headline material would be completely stupid for Festival Republic, given they're a guaranteed seller, and there's not many about, who haven't headlined recently.

If Pearl Jam are too old for this festival, then the likes of Metallica and Blur should be ruled out as well.

That could rule in a hell of a lot of people.

I'd argue a. they're not popular enough with the main demographic Reading argues with, and b. they're not really R&L's type of music anymore.

The original statement was "are they likely?" and for next year, I can't see any reason to justify them being termed likely. That's off the back of the line up from this year obviously.

The only thing that I can really say in their favour of playing next year is they played in '06.

I only said they're likely as Reading's main competition for them would probably be Download, and it probably isn't safe enough for them, whereas they've played Reading and Leeds, so they'd be happy playing there again, as they know it's safe. Can't see them at Glastonbury, certainly not at V, TITP could share them and HRC will probably fold soon due to lack of new headliners, so if they're playing festivals again, why wouldn't they not be likely for R/L?

I don't buy that it's not R/L's type of music anymore. How are they much different from Foos or QOTSA?

What I can't understand as people are saying no way pearl jam play who keep releasing music. Then they say yes to blur, when was there last new album? Basically blur are more of a nostalgia band than either pearl jam or metallica.

Difference is with PJ they haven't broke up really or not been around and reformed. Pulp did. the Cure only place one gig a year, if that and are guaranteed to sell it out at very high prices everytime. AF got their push, R&L are known for it, and yes delivered by all accounts but to a crowd that made most of the Pendulum crowd left watching the screen lol.

As I said though, that's six years ago when they played. Look at the difference between line ups from '06 to '12. Even from '08 to '12. R&L has changed greatly. With regards to the second bit, Foo's and QOTSA are a brand of much more accessible and to a certain extent commercial guitar music.

As I've said, I'd love R/L to look outside the box, because arguably it's hurting the festival. However on evidence from '08 onwards, I can't see anything which would deem them likely for R&L.

You can't say Foo's are aimed at an older market. Young people go wild for them.

Radiohead and Arcade Fire possibly, both are shit mind. Pulp yes - hence the crowd and they were great but people went Beady Eye. Guns are one of the biggest rock and roll bands of all time. I enjoyed them but it'd didn't prove to be a good booking.

I think with Soni out of the picture, Reading will look to add a more 'heavier' dimension to the line ups again, as seen with the addition of Mastodon. It's only so long they can keep booking the same names over and over again, they need to add variety, if they want to keep selling tickets.

Reading usually go for a 'big' headliner every year, Foos, Muse, GNR, Radiohead, Metallica etc., so who would be the likely one if not PJ? Which is why I think they're likely, as well as they haven't played in ages, so no worries about them being a repeat booking.

Do you people actually know any teenagers and what they listen to? I'm 16 and everyone in the group I'm going to Leeds with knows who Pearl Jam are and would definitely see them. And I'd say we're pretty typical of R&L's main demographic.

Pearl Jam are a band where it doesn't matter how old they are. They're a staple grunge band. They'd surely get a large crowd of teenagers purely because they're such a big name and so people will check them out.

The thing is dude, Pearl Jam would safely get booked for HRC next year which rules them out effectively and would be more their target audience. The Cure wouldn't get booked for it.
