By that logic we'd never have Melon Collie as Smashing Pumpkins could (and haven't) live up to Gish/Siamese Dream, we'd never have more Daft Punk stuff because it couldn't live up to Homework/Discovery, Pearl Jam have never topped Ten/Vs. Doesn't mean that subsequent albums aren't worth having.

Edit: Except in the case of Oasis. They should have stopped at Morning Glory.

It's different though because those bands hadn't split up beforehand. Although I feel Zeitgeist did tarnish Smashing Pumpkins' legacy a bit.

Pixies were a product of the late 80s, a rejuvenated 2010s Pixies album wouldn't seem right and the songs would just be in the shadow of the likes of Where Is My Mind, Here Comes Your Man, Bone Machine, Hey, Monkey Gone To Heaven etc. It's highly unlikely that the new songs would live up to the older classics and they would be panned for that reason. It's why I'm unsure about The Stone Roses writing a new album, because musically all four members have moved on from 1989 and it's inevitable the critics will just say "it's not as good as the debut, therefore it's shit".

As long as they keep touring that'll do me.

They've actually said the opposite, there wont be a new album as Kim refuses to do one. The rumour pops up every now and then basically saying the same thing of "we are so close to getting everyone to agree" or something along those lines.

I can't remember the whole story but isn't Bam Thwock just a song Kim wrote for Breeders and is a Pixies song in name only and they just chucked it out on itunes as they had no other use for it?

I have always seen their opinions on a new album to be a joke. TO leave people guessing. We all know there is tension within the band, but last year Joey came out and said it was going to happen, Frank said it would happen in some form or another, Perry Farrell tweeted that they were in the studio and such. I'm not expecting anything soon, but it's their style to one day do an interview and be like "oh yeah, we did this" and announce a new album. I don't know, I hope it happens, but i honestly don't see a reason why it couldn't/shouldn't happen. They just like to keep people guessing.

as for Bam Thwock, I have no idea. All I know is that I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd like a new album from The Breeders too :)

We we'll see. They'll never be honest witht he fans. The only way we know somethins certain is when they announce it, and even that is often bullshit (like when Joey said they were playing Glastonbury 2010, I got excited :( ).

But yeah It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if they were int he studio now. They have all said that they will record and see how it goes. The general feeling seems to be that if they do managed to get on enough to make a record but don't all like how it sounds then they won't put it out. But I'm of the somewhat optimistic opinion that they're just trying to keep people guessing, and they will just announce it one day out of the blue.

I saw Editors last week at Birmingham HMV Institute and it was absolutely sublime. The new songs sounded great too. Really hope they're booked for next year.

I was going to post the video of their Rock Werchter headline performance which was also brilliant, but it's been removed from YouTube due to copyright. :(
