I think they're dreadful, and while a good show can make an average band like Muse more interesting no amount of paper-shooting cannons can excuse or justify the turgid shitspray that Coldplay vomit forth from the stage.

Still that just my opinion and unfortunately I have to admit that they're more likely to headline than the likes of Slipknot, SOAD, AC/DC, Metallica, etc. (none of which I particularly like but who would uphold a better image of the festival).

The only saving grace is that I think that The Killers are a shoe-in and I don't think they'd have Coldplay and The Killers in the same year.

Did they? I'm sure Coldplay were big by the time Keane started playing gigs...

nah, you're defo wrong.

Before either were famous, someone from efests went to see and review Keane - from which I ended up with one of their very early singles. That single was going for £250+ on eBay a few years ago, but I gave away the copy I had a few years ago (when Keane were at their peak) as a competition prize.

Anyway, I digress. The support band that night were Coldplay.

Which bands do we think, at this time, have a legit shout of headlining? I mean acts that you could actually see being booked, not your System of a Downs or your Springsteens etc. It'll just be cool to see who people think could realistically headline, not who they would like to :)

Well everyone seems to agree killer are in with a big chance, although it seems that depends on iow fest.

Biffy and then its anyones guess. I cant see coldplay do it to be honest, personally would like placebo to do it as they have played alot over the years and never managed to headline. Although there to small to headline nowadays.

Potential subs / headliners

Blur

Arcade Fire

Biffy Clyro

Bloc Party

Mumford & Sons

The Killers

Coldplay

The XX

A bit less likely...

Pearl Jam

Green Day

Iron Maiden

AC/DC

Just the usual kind of predictions really.

Biffy have just played everywhere too much, if they didn't sub at Download & IOW this year I could of seen headlining R&L but it would look too weak unless they also headline TITP (due to them being Scottish) which is possible since they are both Live Nation events and they could plan it out that way.

I think it depends on how big FR think it will be rather than how big it is. The former will decide if they're booked, the latter if that booking is successful.

You're right that FR won't have time to see if it's successful so they have to pre-empt that, as they did with Arcade Fire and MCR. I'm sure they get to hear demos/master tapes and if the signs they are getting from those and management/record companies/media regarding how hard it's going to be pushed are good then they'll pull the trigger. I imagine the same sort of thing influenced putting the likes of The Vaccines into a slot that initially seemed to high for them.

If they don't like what they hear, the record company aren't committing to putting promotional money behind it and the folks at Radio 1/MTV don't sound like they're going to put the stuff on rotation then they'll likely shy away from pushing the band up to that status because it's unlikely they'll have hit headline status/popularity by the time the festival comes around.

Yeah I think Biffy Clyro have dug theirselves a bit of hole with playing so much and so many fests, this year would have been perfect for them to have off with nothing to promote!

Their around the right size for a bump up but with so many having a chance to see them all the time, they are hardly a major coup for a festival as headliner. (Then again was there last tour much bigger than Florences and she only subbed.) Maybe we overestimate their size a bit for a new rockish headliner to emerge.
