AcademicPistol
Bear in mind that FNM headlined Download on the back of their reunion though
mrtourette
Very true on both counts. EDIT: All three including AP's. FNM were a weaker-ish headliner while Soundgarden were a strong sub. Edited September 24, 2012 by mrtourette

mrtourette
I saw them at Hyde Park and they were amazing, but the more times the better. I'll definitely go see them on tour (as long as they don't try and play somewhere daft like the O2 or Wembley arena) but them popping up at Reading would be a treat. kaosmark2
Ah you just hunger for more. I saw them Download but I believe they were better at Hyde Park. Yeah a few more bands like Soundgarden would really improve Reading.
thetime
Would be a good nme headliner in my view, although Im not a fan of there work. Would the tent be half empty? God yeah. I would say even more empty than fnm.
Gucci Piggy
The Fratellis are amazing.......two actual new songs??!...or maybe something off Jon's solo album? (It was pretty much ignored by most people, so not sure if your a fan enough to know about it )...I want a london gig so bad! It's been a year since I saw Jon's solo tour I'd have them at reading

Mouseboy11
I would normally suggest this but I can't picture them subbing any of the possible headliners. Them subbing Biffy would be a joke, and playing under Blur or The Killers just doesn't sound right. Last time they subbed it was under Neil Young so it would need to be another respected/older act to make sense. Maybe if they pull a curveball and book Metallica or ACDC it would fit, but they're more likely to be used as an alternative to a more modern pop/indie act and that's when their numbers will suffer. kaosmark2
They should just book Neil Young again and have them sub him. Then Pavement underneath Soundgarden
DMCJ2
I'm a big Mumford fan and love their new album but even though I'm a big fan, I think they shouldn't headline. I admit there aren't as many headline options as in previous years but I feel Mumford would be perfectly happy to sub, other acts deserve to headline festivals more, acts such as Biffy and Bloc Party who have released many albums and done their time playing lower slots. You only have to listen to what Kasabian said (I know some aren't fans but I really like them) they said they felt they had earnt the headline slot after releasing four albums which meant they then also had enough material. the wonderwhy
I think Mumford might do what Florence did this year; sub Reading (or other 'big' festival) and then headline Bestival. I think Bestival will be the first one they headline anyway. Their new ablum is only going to make them more popular & more likely to be bumped up to a headliner though. Not only is is good, its also full of songs that would go down well at a festival... On a side note, Lucy Rose released her debut today. Its incredible. Almost as good as her set at the festival this summer. Really needs to be back next year in a higher slot Edited September 24, 2012 by MattDavies__

rivalschools.price
Also to add to the three-year long Soundgarden argument, I think if they headlined the tent they'd get a considerably bigger crowd that ATDI or FNM. Over a sustained period of time they were more popular and have more of a credited contribution to a bigger musical movement (one which still has some sway at R&L) than either of those two. While they failed to sell an impressive amount of tickets for HRC at least they were considered a reasonable option to headline, ATDI and FNM would never have been in the mix, and although this is complete guesswork I would say that a tour would sell more tickets and take in more venues than ATDI or FNM would even attempt to fill. Add to that the fact that they've still only played two shows over here since they reformed and there will still be some interest from mild fans in them due to the reunion factor, although that will obviously be lost when/if they tour. I doubt they'd fill the tent like some of the modern headliners and of course it depends who they're up against on the main stage but I doubt it would be as disasterous as some are suggesting. jump
i think we will always have small crowds for NME headliner from now on because for some reason more and more people are opting to watch the main stage headliner.crowd size in the NME is more due to the time they play than their popularity.for example, the hives got a huge crowd mid afternoon but im sure it would have been much smaller if they had headlined the NME against Kasabian or the Foos. AcademicPistol
Pendulum & Lost Prophets got huge crowds against Arcade Fire & Radiohead and I'm assuming it was the same for Maccabees against The Cure.
