I don't know how many times this has been said on here, but Damon backtracked on that in an interview recently and said they're not gonna plan too ahead, but possibly play a few shows every now and again, so if R&L tried to book them, it could happen. Though, the situation does seem to keep changing in terms of recording new music and playing live shows; Damon's creating a lot of confusion in interviews at the moment.

Well, I'm assuming he means they're just gonna play 1 or 2 shows every now and again, but not get locked into big tours and producing a whole album together; Damon's contradictory interviews have confused me, but I think they're still definitely a possibility for next year.

I would be happy with any of those (as long as Linkin Park played nothing too recent) but it goes back to the point on the last page about needing a big headliner and for the R&L demographic I'm not sure any of those fit the bill in the way Metallica, Foo's, Muse, Green Day, Blur do. Apart from Blur none of the others are a realistic possibility next year which is why I think rightly or wrongly there is a very strong chance of Metallica playing.

I think it varies. Some say they're the big acts people crave, I say they're the predictable, unimaginative bookings that appeal to a lot of people but have few devoted fans who will be truly delighted by their presence. Of course, this is going back to an earlier point, but I don't think they need to just have these acts on cycle.

It's certainly putting me off. There seems to be a bit of a tendency to book the same safe acts, yet try and advertise the set as being something a bit special to pull in those that have seen them before: Muse performing OOS, Metallica Black Album, Big 4, etc. I'd kinda like to see Foos again, but they wouldn't get me to a festival, and would lose out in most clashes (going for Cure/ATDI/Lanegan, undecided so far as to whether to watch Foos or Justice)

That said, OOS got me to Reading last year and Black Album helped me drag mates along to DL this year (despite Soundgarden blatantly being the best band there), so I guess these attempts are working.

I think Reading have done fairly well in terms of repeat headliners lately, I've been going since 03 and The only repeats I've seen are/will be Metallica/Foos and Muse. I think that's fairly good going for nearly 10 years (Obviously going back another year would bump it up a bit).

I suppose it's tough to get elevated to headliner status these days, you've either got to be an old band reuniting or ride to the top of a scene.

There aren't many bands I can see getting there any time soon. Queens of the Stone could if their next album is something special (which my gut tells me it won't be) other then that I can see Biffy doing it and not that either are my cup of tea but Mumford and Sons or Pendulum on the basis of mainstream popularity.

Like many others have said... people seem to expect huge mega bands every year and won't accept anything less, I was gobsmacked at the negative reaction the Cure got when announced for this year.

Me personally, headliners don't bother me so much. I'd rather they took more chances on smaller headliners and nailed an the rest of the lineup with more interesting and variety in the bookings.

R&L is great and not repeating their own headliners, however when you take other festivals into consideration there's very little that hasn't headlined elsewhere in recent years and when they try and buck that trend with the likes of MCR and Arcade Fire they get grief for it.
