Arguably the biggest headliner in the world who hadn't played since 2001 - Eminem

Who many argued was too poppy and not relevant to the festival anymore. Equal in size to AM

A legendary pop punk band that rarely play in the uk and hadn't played since 2004 - Green Day

Except they play fairly regularly in the UK, they just hadn't done any festival shows in a while as their own shows make them more money. Blink have played a lot less in the last 10 years.

An Up and coming band who had already headlined soni, and then had a number 1 double album - Biffy Clyro

At the time of the announcement biffy were being argued of being too small, they hadn't subbed the festival before and when they headlined soni it was a mid large size festival and at larger festivals had lower slots than headline (iow and reading) at least paramore and Qotsa have subbed twice. Paramore last two albums have went to number one in the UK.

compared to:

A 'Legendary' pop punk band that only played 4 years ago. - Blink 182

Admittedly probably the biggest current band, although extremely over exposed, also only 5 years ago - Arctics

A 'up and coming' pop punk band not seen ready to make the step up by most, although number 1 album but long term sales weren't extraordinary who will have played 3 times in 5 years - Paramore

Admittedly a legendary 'up and coming' band, however arguable can't make the step up - Qotsa

RATM - 2008 - 6 years is fine if the others can do it, especially if blink can do it in 4...

I think what this all comes down to is age.

For us that have been to quite a few readings, this is shocking and poor. For those more new to it all, I'm jealous, I used to feel like that too, and your time will come when you are miserable kanyes like me and Kaosmark.

For me, blink headlining is literally probably the worst headliner they could have announced. If I was to look back at the last few years and point out the one that was horrible to watch, and debatable in worthiness of headlining, it would be blink. Add to that there's no more reunion hype and they are well past it AND they headlined 4 years ago - it's a fucking disgrace.

If prodigy and qotsa get announced, as well as a decent undercard, I may still be tempted. But god knows with the likes of other recent additions like foals, jake bugg, and disclosure playing high slots as well as other likely tripe like you me at six and paramore, then I truly despair.

I guess maybe it's just having been to too many fests to enjoy that seeing a band for the 1st time feeling now, but even if you've been to reading one or 2 years, it's gonna be repeat galore. Downloads and Soni are bad for it - looks like reading is now too

Only because everyone is Gazza. He's no more Gazza than you.

No but I actually am Gazza.

My first time was 2011 and I told the head booker I'll throw shit at the wall and piss on the main stage if it's Blink, AM and a co-headline, so I guess I'm just generally a mardy Kanye. I even threatened that before the announcement, before I'd been overridden by anger.

Yeah it is quite surprising how Melvin can say next year will be better than this year with Blink-182

Good on you! I mean I just think reading must have really struggled this year, what kind on mad twat thinks the 1st go too band to headline the biggest uk rock fest is blink 182...again....

Loving the shit storm

So if they had waited until 2015 I take it that Blink would have been ok...given all the want for Arctic Monkeys who played a bloody dull headline set in 2009? :P

On the plus side, at least Blink 182 haven't been all over the place over here, will have two new albums of new material ..makes sense

Metronomy, Disclosure, Of Mice and Men all decent...I am some what hopeful, better than last years initial announcement anyway....

Now just need one decent headliner and Franz Ferdinand to play against the inevitable shit headliner in the NME.

I think that's what fucks me off about it so much. While I'm migrating to smaller fests, I still want to see me some big acts in a crowd 50000+ strong once a year without paying through the nose for stadium gigs. Smaller shows are in general far more enjoyable, but there's a particular experience that comes from being part of a ridiculously large festival crowd loving a massive act you're delighted to see. I get that as someone who moves around different festivals and has been going to them since '07 (longer if you count day tickets) I'll see lots of bands repeated, but I'd like there to be a bit of imagination and rarity in bookings. This year.... SOAD had only done one other festival since their reunion, Green Day hadn't in ages (even though I hate them), Eminem hadn't in a decade, this was Biffy's biggest slot yet, NIN had only done 2 UK festival slots in the last decade. There were bands that would be special. By booking Blink (and presumably Arctics and Paramore), every headline band will have played in the last 5 years. That's not exciting and different, that's just recycling acts as badly as Download and Soni.

I hate the arctics but I can't deny the almost magnetic pulling power they have for the vast majority and they are probably the biggest British band of the last decade. So yeah, it would (and will by the sounds of things) be accepted. Tickets would sell.

Blink 182 are a 90s immature shit pop punk band that are like green days more useless little brothers. People got boners over reminiscing and singing along to first date back in 10 but now....again....really? Their new stuff isn't that popular or liked for Christs sake!? Yes they hardly play here but there's a reason for that. They don't have the demand.

Arctic Monkeys would have been okay because they are Arctic Monkeys

and Blink-182 would have been not... well, because they are Blink-182

Desperately looking for a silver lining here.

If anyone has the time can we please list all the clues we've been given regarding next years headliners?

I'm just looking for a bit of hope regarding the other headliner being Paramore or Arctics

1. Luckysalt said Arctic Monkeys are one of the headliners.

2. Luckysalt said there would be co-headliners.

3. It won't be QOTSA 'and' Prodigy. -> one of them could still be headliner

4. There is a high chance for Paramore to be one of the headliners

No silver linings...

Exactly. I'm in the same boat literally but my 1st weekend was 06. But up until now the headliners have been different, varied, and the lineups have been interesting. I will give this a chance, but it's the worst 1st impression I've had ever.

That's why I commend andy copping for booking avenged to headline, and at least he's making sure linkin park play their universally held best album in full. Soni have got 2 of the biggest metal bands ever, despite being repeated.

Reading has repeated a shit little pop punk band. RHCP would have been better then this.

Apart from missing out one word, I agree with pretty much all this post. (well I don't hate Arctics, but there's a reason I haven't seen them).
