The quality is open to opnion but what isn't is the 'newness' (there must be a better word for it than that) of the NME stage, with only four acts having more than one record out, and how well-know the bands lower down are.

The rest of what you say makes sense, apart from this which is complete nonse

ok i may have worded it wrong, just think its obvious to see from the main stage this year that it is heavier than previous years. Normally the 'heavier' bands on main stage we are looking at are acts such as Shikari etc. hate to use the term 'heavier' but ah well

Oh right, fair enough. I thought he just meant this year is heavier main stage wise and not too dissimilar to a download lineup. But yeah, the fest is unique in that its varied from having bands from a load of genres. I thought that was universally accepted

I did mean that the main stage was heavier than it usually is that's what i was trying to say. I stated that there are 18 bands that could easily play download from the main stage. Was just comparing not meaning it proves it is heavier.

Well if it was main stage specific that would make more sense, although when the Download line-up was done I said it looked more like an R&L line-up. There's a lot of potential crossover between the two this year, although I don't know why it's R&L that gets judged as being 'like Download' rather than vice versa.

And as usual trying to judge how heavy a festival based is on how many bands have played a heavier festival is completely flawed. C&S played Download last year, does that mean that booking C&S this year makes R&L 'heavier'? Of course not, as just because a band played a 'heavy' festival doesn't make them 'heavy'.

Sorry dude think you misinterpreted what i said. I was talking main stage specific, Also, I never said that Reading is heavier based upon how many bands have played Download before, i just counted 18 bands on the main stage that could easily play Download. The bands i counted are the ones that would appeal to a heavier crowd. Obviously lots of acts could play at various festivals was just pointing out how 'heavy' the main stage looks this year compared to past years.

Yeah to be honest I thought you were talking about the whole festival rather than just the main stage.

Whether it's heavier or not I dunno, I still maintain that just because the likes of The Blackout, We Are The In Crowd, Lower Than Atlantis, New Found Glory, Brand New, Twin Atlantic, etc. have played or could play Download doesn't mean they're heavy. A lot of the Download crossover stuff that R&L has is soft as shit.

I would mark down SOAD, Deftones, BMTH, Skindred, NIN and by the looks of it Bury Tomorrow as 'heavy', but it would differ from person to person, which was my point that you can't really prove how heavy the line-up is.

Yeah that is true, I admit some of the bands I included wouldn't be classed as neccessarily 'heavy' like the ones you just named. But bands like BMTH, While She Sleeps, Bury Tomorrow, SOAD, Skindred etc do come under that category. I just reckon theres heavier bands on the main than usual.

True, it is strange because reading has had more download like bands for many more years then download has rnl type acts. But then I don't hang in the download forum, maybe they've picked up on it.

And yeah, again, very valid point. It's just because they were at a heavy rock fest they got put in that category. Maybe download will loose that label one day. I've certainly seen it as a good alternative music wise to reading in the last few years

Yeah just to sum up in a new post, I think it's because recently reading has had indie/softer acts on the main stage which there is less of this year. Download is good a getting bands that "get people moving", even if they arent "heavy" and because there's alot of bands that could play download this year on main it's being summed up as downloady.

There's no kaiser chiefs put it that way haha.

The line-up is more segregated this year, so whilst the main stage seems to lean towards the 'heavy' side more than list year, the line-up on the whole has basically the same amount of 'heavy' acts.

Yep, although you could argue they have bigger heavier acts which makes it more appealing to the more metallzz kids! But downloads got a brill lineup this year too so it'll be interesting to see if the audiences change much in terms of sub cultures y'all

There isn't a hope in hell.

I'm certain this won't be the last time it's mentioned though. Great news but yeah if they're just reuniting for a tour then I doubt they'll be about anywhere next summer, and the UK leg of their tour won't leave London which isn't incredibly handy. An ATP curated and headlined by them would have been genius if they weren't being canned.

I think they will do Coachella and Primavera next year. But with ATP coming to an end, I guess there's a chance they could potentially play elsewhere.

Yeah I suppose if they're absolutely anywhere in Europe in 2014, they'll be at Primavera. I'm not sure if ATP are planning on carrying on their weekends in a new venue, but NMH would be a hell of a way to kick it off - alternatively they could just do a one day event like YYY and Grizzly Bear are doing.
