Artists are putting show prices up because labels are getting greedier, and greedier.

Labels get a lower percentage of show prices than CD/download sales.

I thought Queens were pretty good value for £35. My mates paid £32 each for Winter Wonderland (then clubbed together for my ticket).

Mind you, I wouldn't have paid much more than 40 quid to see them

(Disclaimer: I am sllighty drunk. This post may not make sense)

Yup. (not relevant)

Yup.

(I am also slightly drunk).

Courteeners

Didn't you see what happened last time?

I paid £55 for Radiohead. Maybe it's that I've been going to gigs for a few years and am out of date but afaic a standard arena show price is £40+fees, and outdoor gig £50+fees. Given the fact I have to travel to go to any arena I just feel they need to be something special for me to bother. I hate them as a venue type - I much prefer the sound quality at outdoor gigs that aren't Hyde Park, but I just feel paying a premium for indoor shows is ridiculous. I'd much rather catch bands at a festival or a big outdoor show. I even prefer stadiums to arenas (as long as price is equivalent). I absolutely hate them.

Maybe PJ would be worth it, but I'm one of those fans that feel they have 2 excellent albums and a few other cracking songs rather than are consistently excellent, and I figure that even with their distaste for fests I'll catch them at some point anyway. It's just too high a price for me to gamble on a band I don't obsess over.

I paid almost £80 for Radiohead and thought it was worth every penny so that's the guidelines I go by, might be skewed by that. But I mean, people buy £100 day tickets for a single band as well. I think arena shows at £30-£40 are cheap so I dunno, but if it's a big popular band I'd always rather catch them at their own show personally than a festival date so I'd normally happily cough up for it. The only time I've though 'no that's way too fucking much' for a band I like would be the same example you use, Rush, when it came to nearly £90 or whatever.

The Leeds show is the same price as the PJ20 shows eighteen months ago though so I dunno how they've caught everybody by surprise.

I think the Leeds one is standard, but for me, compared with going to Werchter instead, it's still a hell of a lot. Although I didn't even know the MK Bowl wasn't an indoor arena til I just looked it up, but £70+ still seems a bit excessive

I didn't either you know - I thought that was gonna be an all day thing and was barely thinking about that one as it's not the one I'm planning to go to :P Well, it's closer to my upper reaches then I reckon. I wish Werchter was an option for me.

EDIT: Are we all drunk?

no :(

edit: am happy to pay up to £50 for an arena gig, depends on who the act is of course though ;)

Do you mean all-in with travel? I went to MEN and ticket with fees split came to under £60/person for Radiohead. I've never bought a fest day-ticket for a single band, I've bought tickets for one-day fests at £40-50, but again, that's outdoor gig rather than fest prices.

Rush are a fucking disgrace. I'd like to see them but not at those pricings.

It didn't catch me by surprise. It's still too much for me though.

Why's Werchter not an option? Can't get mates to go abroad or dates?

Quite possibly.

Erm, was that the 2012 show? Standing ticket? I definitely paid between £70 and £80 for it so I dunno what's gone on there. Outdoor shows are a bit nicer but I usually expect to pay around the same anyway, maybe even less sometimes. I haven't been to the new arena in Leeds yet so I probably aren't treating it with the contempt I'd treat Manchester or Sheffield yet.

Got Glasto the week before plus I don't think my mates would wanna go abroad for a festival.

Yup. Yup. I paid £107 for 2 tickets. Great time.

I dunno, I haven't been to NIA, Notts or the new Leeds one yet and I still view them all as arenas. I actually think MEN is the best of the lot, although that's not saying much.

Fair enough. I managed to drag a mate over there a few years ago but I'd probably struggle to do so again without a stellar lineup suited to someone's taste. It'd be easier if more of my mates had money mind you.

I was worried about this with my mates - the going abroad part, and that they're not great at planning in advance, but when Pearl Jam were announced this morning my mate text me with "We're going even if everyone else bails out", so that's me sorted even if it's just two of us. I didn't even know he liked Pearl Jam and he's been my best mate for 7 years, oops

I love how for all of us the end of a night out doesn't just include whatever drunken munchies we favour, but logging onto efests and making disturbing flirty comments.

Pretty much summed up my life in a nutshell.

Second only to the fact in Year 8 my English teacher made us watch Galaxy Quest and I'd already seen it like ten times.

My mates are all useless. The key I found is just making sure that one of them stumps up the money early rather than giving them time to back out and then getting the others to tag along.

Was it off Sandbag? Really curious as to how I paid so much more than you. I must have ended up donating to Greenpeace or something Thom twisted my arm into. It's not really that I couldn't get my mates to go, it's just I can never be arsed arranging it, organising friends for UK festivals is tough enough without flights and hotels and shit.

Is it just me or do you think that when you go past the headliners and possibly the second stage headliner, RW gets a bit thin on the ground for good acts though? If you don't like rap or EDM then it's a bit of a struggle.

I'll go with you x

Thanks but I (figuratively) wipe my ass with money when I'm at Glastonbury so I couldn't buy any naked pints with you.

Bought them in the Radiohead fan presale. And yeah, arranging crap is a pain. We booked a Eurostar and then travel in Belgium was covered by the ticket and we just rocked up and booked a place on the day, figured we'd wing it once out there (and were wondering if we could get others going).

I think RW has a really weak undercard most years. I went in '08 when I loved loads of the bands, but no year since has really looked truly stellar to me. I tend to find it's got 2-3 acts on the main stage each day who are massive, and then just a selection that you luck out whether you like or not. I don't find it's particularly genre focused, just a smattering of acts that are a consistent size, but there's a heavy fall off below the top 3 each day. I think there's other Euro fests that are likely to have better undercards although Werchter tends to get the best headlierns of all each year.

Just gone to have a look at past Werchter undercards - 2010 through 13 looked pretty good for my tastes. Although noticed the amount of repeat headliners, although I guess they get away with it because who's gonna complain about Pearl Jam and Editors headlining that often :P

I personally feel it's a festival you do once or twice to experience it and tick off a large number of big acts. I'm far more interested in going to Roskilde/Sziget/Primavera or some other Euro fest next time I go abroad than back there. I had a great time and I'm delighted I did it but I'm not itching to go back short of an incredible lineup (Tool and Daft Punk).
