Go for it! I got into VU and Lou Reed when I first watched Adventureland (what an AWESOME movie that is btw, may as well plug that :P).

Lou Reed hologram to headline :ninja:

Best soundtrack to a film, ever. Really. Pale Blue Eyes is also one of my favourite songs too. Absolutely beautiful.

What are you going to rant about? I only remember you ranting about pop-punk in the past.

Rage Against the Machine aren't a particularly good band. They have a style which they do well, but it's very formulaic: Riff with verse, chorus, riff with verse, shouting the main lyric repeatedly. They've only managed to do one album worth a damn, and that has no variation in style, they've only been able to follow it up with a few decent singles, yet the only way to distinguish between their songs is which lyric is shouted repeatedly. The riffs are incredibly similar, the lyrics are unimaginative and simplistic, designed for mass-appeal with image-based political references, and to emphasise again, there's no variation whatsoever.

Considering the very name of the band, they are very much part of the "machine". They signed to a major label, they work advertising, they work their own image. They pushed the Christmas Number One race against X-Factor winners, but their sales provide just as much to the pockets of Cowell. When they reunited, they claimed it wasn't about the money but a reaction to the upcoming election - however that doesn't tie in at all with the progression of politics and the views they've expressed. They've done free gigs, they've worked the perception, but that's no different to David Beckham giving his footballing wages to charity, a loss-leader to maintain a brand.

I do think they sincerely mean what they say about politics, their lower-key activism - particularly Morello's - stands out as genuine and purposeful, but they are a corporate entity, a now-accepted face of rebellion, gentrified into the terrible genre they inspired. It'd be ridiculous if I singled them out for their hypocrisy, but they aren't a unique, special band. I really don't think they've aged well, nor has their legacy. They're rated so highly in comparison to what followed because having done it first they're more acceptable, more credible, but they are one of the most overrated acts in existence, and unlike the Beatles, having rode a market ripe for their style upon emergence, they weren't able to adapt it and evolve their sound.

Phew, it's been a while since I've done that.

We can't manage a band. What about a song? There must be a song we all like!

Firestarter- The Prodigy?

Not a fan. I do like The Prodigy though.

I'd wager that song that most people know by sigur ros. (it's 3 AM and I can't be fucked trying to remember what it's called and then how to spell it) Most people know that song and I can't think of a single reason why anybody couldn't like it even a little bit.

I like them a lot but I agree wholeheartedly. I listen to them a fair bit and even I often have to check my ipod every now and then because I end up thinking "which one's this again?"

I agree about Rage really. I don't dislike them, their debut record is a good 90's rock record and I'd like to see them at some point, but they don't really deserve to be held in as high regard as they are. They'd have much more respect in my eyes if they had written some stuff in the years since they split or even since they reunited, their message is probably more appropriate than ever right now.

I always have to drop in the opinion that they're a very talented group of musicians though.
