nightcrawler13
I've searched through the Google help pages but nothing answers my question... I'm working on this website, and it has the word fuck in the url, I know that Google Adsense is a bit of an old lady when it comes to profanity, so if I have an url (should it be aN url? It seems to be the grammatic rule but it sounds wrong when you say it out loud ) and replace the word with the letter F, but still have the original url link to the site, will Google have an issue? Anyone have much experience with Google Adsense in general?

nightcrawler13
It's 'a url', like 'a university'. Basically the phonetic sound is 'yoo-', so it's treated as a consonant. Basically, if the first syllable of the word sounds like a consonant, it's 'a', and if it sounds like a vowel, it's 'an'. Can't help with google adsense though, sorry. kaosmark2
ahh, that explains it. I always thought it was 'an' if the following word started with a vowel and 'a' if not, thanks
MrZigster
Soapbox time: I always get a tiny bit angry whenever I see the phrase "an hotel". I've seen it a couple of times this week in newspapers that should know better. It's only "an" hotel if you drop the aitch, and you only drop that aitch in speech, not in print. And that's an aitch, not a haitch. FFS I was taught this sort of thing at six or seven. (Dismounts soapbox to compose a letter to the Daily Fail about declining literary standards). Edited for grammar, embarrassingly. Edited March 17, 2012 by MrZigster

nightcrawler13
why do 'they' say an hotel?
Katster
because though the English like to blame Americans for bastardizing the language, a lot do a great job on their own. Such as pronouncing hotel, "'oh-tel'
