Interesting bit of info regarding the booking process for those who may be interested

I have a mate who is fairly well connected with media because of his job in radio, and he knows someone with "connections" to Mean Fiddler/Festival Republic.

Apparently FR line-up five headliners for Reading and Leeds, they pick three of them and they pay the other two off. He told me that according to this person, the Stone Roses asked to play for free but for whatever reason (they might have already been booked for V Festival by this point) they didn't get them, so they paid them off. I've also heard that they had difficulties booking Kasabian as they wanted to be the big Sunday headliner at Reading (which may explain why they've closed TITP and IOW before), and the Foos were one of the five headliners lined up last year, but had tour commitments in America, I believe.

Surely the fifth "headliner" this year was Green Day? Blur possibly.

Stone roses asked to play for free? And they paid them not to play, I know there supposed to be shit live but paying them to be quiet......

Seems a bit far fetched booking 5 headliners if you ask me, didnt foos say they wanted to end doing the festivals in uk(this album) by playing reading this year. They were at rock en seine last year, so wasnt in usa.

What a load of horseshit.

Foos not playing last year had nothing to do with US tour commitments. I'm sure they 'line-up' more than three headliners but they pay them if they don't want them so those bands can then go on to play other festivals as English exclusives? Nonsense. Stone Roses offered to play for free but R&L didn't want them as they were already playing V, so R&L paid them off? Nonsense. Surely being paid off would compensate the band for not taking other bookings if R&L decided they didn't want them, they wouldn't get paid off by R&L if they'd already agreed to headline other festivals.

If I were you I would stop believing nearly everything that that mate tells you. It's complete bollocks.

I expect this from newbies but not you VCK!

How on earth did you even believe this for one second?

What it could be is that they have a shortlist of 5 headliners and might enter negotations with 5 probably more than this ammount, and thats it. Theres NO way whatsoever a festival would pay for 5 headliners and then only use 3. Especially in the market festivals are these days. It would be throwing money away, the other possibilty could be they arrange for the band to play the following year instead, but never pay them for nothing.

Foos were booked very early for IOW last year theres no chance Reading paid them money not to play at Reading. They probably entered a contract very early to play this year and thats what this mate of yours is getting confused with.
