Holiday!

The bloke and I have been together for four years this year and for one reason and another have never been on holiday just the two of us.

We have decided, mostly to try and keep costs down, to hire a van, stick a mattress in the back, and set off on our merry little way.

There are a few things we are planning to do while we are away; mostly mountain bike riding, but also including kayaking on ullswater, coasteering in Wales, a proper cream tea in Devon, fish and chips in Robin

Hoods bay (yes, we are planning on doing a fair bit of travelling). But wondered if anyone has any ideas for must see sights in

Britain that may be included on our tour?

Having been abroad for the past few years now I am actually really looking forward to seeing parts of my country I have never seen, while returning to a few of my old favourite places along the way.

If the weather is shit we will just chill in the back of the van with the doors open facing a beautiful view, with our heads in a good book listening to the world go by.

Am I sad? Where would you go in Britain? Where are your favourite places?

We are thinking circular route and hoping to get as far north as Scotland and as far south as Cornwall, though we will of course have to play that by ear depending on traffic etc.

Give the Brecon Becons a shot. Went there a lot in the army. Camp up on a high hill and the sight in a morning can be amazing. It is often foggy and the fog rolls in the valleys like a sea. I am tempted to even say it can be a transcendental experience.

Whitby. One of my favourite places.

I hate to admit it but give East Yorkshire a drive through. There is a fantastic aquarium in Hull called The Deep as well as a drive across the bridge into Lincolnshire (I was brought up near the bridge). A drive down to Lincoln and you pass Scampton and you often see the Red Arrows flying.

If you are going anyway near Treacle in Dumfries there is a lovely village called Kirkcudbright. Some of the film The Wickerman was filmed there.

Am off up to the Isle of Skye next week for 5 days work, looking forward to it as not been over there before and not been up the lovely roads to there for a lot of years.

The Gower Peninsula near Swansea is absolutely fantastic. Gorgeous area. Easy to do lots of stuff there as well.

As has been said, a lot of Cornwall is nice. I was in Perranporth quite recently and that was great.

Cheers for the replies and suggestions. I have been to all places mentioned apart from the brecon beacons (we are taking a tent so camping up a hill sounds good - is wild camping permitted??) and Swansea.

However, the other half hasn't travelled the uk before at all so I will be sure to take him to some places I have loved before to share it with him.

He's the mountain biker so I am making sure we visit coed y brenin in Wales. Does anyone know the big trail in Scotland and where exactly it is?? Shouldn't be too hard to find I guess I am just being lazy

Does anyone have any secret places they would be willing to share? You know - those I can't find in any "tip ten things to do" lists.

Rufus I have been to the deep before but isn't it in just the strangest of places?! It's like a ghost town industrial estate and then boom! Great big fook off fish tank!

there is that mini village in the south of Wales I went to, with all the living houses made of stone and wood with garden roofs, it's not really a tourist place, but they are all super lovely hippy folk who just talk to anyone who wanders through I'll find out the post code if you are keen, they even have a blacksmith who just stands in a fire pit smacking metal all day

just had a few days on skye. Amazing place. Weather wasn't great (although from talking to a local, what i saw passed for pretty good) but its the sort of place that suits that dark brooding type of weather. Would've been nice to see a bit more of the mountains though, pretty much shrouded in cloud the whole time.

If you get to Cornwall then I would recommend going to The Lost Gardens of Heligan.

We are having to scrap Scotland. Don't get me wrong i love the place but everything is so spread out and remote that it would take up a lot of time and we unfortunately only have two weeks to play with.

We are also hoping the weather will be better travelling south though i know this is not always the case!

Those gardens look lovely and yes please Dan if you could get me the details of the mini village place.

Absolutely stunning beaches. There are some real hidden gems if you go further afield into Wales (Pembrokeshire), but this is close enough to the motorways and a nice start before heading south to Cornwall or whatever.

Check out the 'Activities' link ... you can do your coasteering while you are there.

Definitely. I've been to Llangennith and Oxwich and both were absolutely fantastic. Probably head to other ones for coasteering, but the area is gorgeous.

My parents lived in Cornwall for a decade and they say Trevone on the North Cornwall coast is their favourite beach. Its near padstow though so it is a bit more of a tourist trap but it is stunning and the surf is great.

yup. Its a beautiful place. i can't take credit for the picture, although I do have one almost identical, just didn't have it to hand to host.

I went in August and there were only about 5 other people on the beach (only down side is the beach is a bit shingly and pebbly), but for cornwall in peak season that's my kind of place.

Plus we found a tiny farm near there (Penpol I think its called) that sells its own farm scrumpy straight out the barrel. £5 a gallon ... *in thickest west country* "its supposed to be 8%, but me and my old man think it comes in a bit higher" wink wink.

That's the thing, the tourists get dragged down to west cornwall because of lands end, lizard, penzance, St Ives etc, but East Cornwall has some real gems and is so much quieter. Bodmin moor where my parents lived is stunning for walks as well.

Kat if you're looking for a good walk then park your car in Cardinham village and walk up onto the moor up to an ancient ruined fort called cardinham castle. Right on top of the moor, sheep roaming around on it, completely deserted. one of the highest points in cornwall and on a good day you can see most of the county, including both the bristol channel and english channel from the same spot

Love cornwall, gutted my parents moved last year
