I need to fuck off out of this country for a good week or so to somewhere with sun before my SAD actually kills me.....

A desert would be good.

Does the sun make you hyper?

I'm asking because I seem to have some kind of energy version of SAD - I eat and hibernate with lack of sun, then get absolutely manic during sunny periods.

So I'm permanently exhausted, it just varies from lethargy to sleep deprivation.

Dahab in Egypt fits the bill. Very hot, sunny and on the edge of the desert. Fortunately it's on the coast too. You can even go on camel rides into the desert and eat meals with the bedouins at night. And if you get the right ones you can also have a 'smoke' too.

Because of the crap weather we are thinking of grabbing a last minute flight to visit friends in Tenerife instead of our road trip. Does anyone have any experience of just turning up at the airport in the hope of getting on a flight? I was hoping to get a last minute deal but they are all coming back at around £350 each return, which isn't that cheap for a weeks holiday!! Even when I search for flights leaving in a couple of days they are coming back at £350 ish.

We have friends who live in Tenerife so whenever we can get a flight is fine but with all the festivals I am doing this year we only actually have a window of one week so we are unfortunately not flexible on dates only times.

A cheap flight to Tenerfie during the school holidays? You will be lucky.

So thinking of heading to Cornwall for a few days. Would people recommend it? Never been but looks lovely!

yup, it's a beautiful county, and small enough to get around everywhere with ease.

Here's a tip: if it's raining on the south coast head for the north coast (and vice versa) - chances are you'll find better weather on the opposite coast.

For a fantastic beach, I recommend Sennen.

For a more off-the-beaten-track experience, I recommend Torpoint to Fowey, and anywhere on The Lizard.

I reckon St Michael's Mount is worth a visit (but then again I've got a weird thing for islands. I want my own ).

Back into Devon, don't bother with Plymouth. It's the pits.

Penzance is the main airport in cornwall. Not sure if there are any others.

Be warned that it can be very busy at this time of year.

I recommend going to Polpero. Its a lovely little fishing village, and there are plenty more of them too if you like that sort of thing. Avoid Padstow, unless you are a massive Rick Stein fan. Nearly every shop there is now owned by him.

And wheres the nearest place to fly into from Dublin?

Places I'd recommend are;

The Lost Gardens of Heligan

The Eden Project

Tintagel Castle

Also I've not eaten there (they were still doing building works) but have been to the bay which is nice - Jamie Olivers 15 restaurant at Watergate Bay. Probably a bit pricey but worth it if you are pushing the boat out a little. Lunch there may be cheaper.

Cool cheers. Think Bristol is the nearest airport. Rent a car there and drive down.

The nearer ones (tho might not have direct flights for you) are Plymouth, Penzance, and Newquay.

PS: it's about 135 miles from Bristol to the Devon/Cornwall border.

One last thing - is it pricey? Restaurants, booze etc?

standard UK holiday trap prices.

So Cornwall ain't happening so I booked a trip to London next week. 3 days. Haven't been years. Any Londoners recommend anything worthwhile on at the moment? Like the Rolling Stones exhibition (which I just found out is over dry.png), temporary installations etc?

Planning to go to the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Tate Modern, ICA all the usual stuff.

If you like sort of royal/london history stuff, the royal river exhibition (At the national maritime museum) was rather interesting, you've also got the cutty sark just opened again as sort of more touristy things to do!

Indiana Jones is on at the BFI imax :P

Other than that we're all sad about the Olympics going away now :P

I'd look at Time Out London prior to going as it should give you a heap of suggestions for things to do.
