Love Chicago. My favourite US city. Loads to do as a tourist, great museums, galleries, etc. bars, blues & jazz clubs, good sports city, great architecture, plenty to keep you entertained, but unlike, say, New York (which I also love), it feels like a 'real' city. Somewhere you could imagine living. Had some great nights out there too, including one of my best birthdays. On my own in a hostel while travelling the US, went out with some people, met up with some locals (including a cop, who knew everyone - walked into one place, it was like walking into Cheers.). I couldn't buy a drink all night. whenever i finished one, a new one appeared.

Also used to have one of my favourite hostels, but it changed hands, they 'improved' it and ruined it. admittedly it was a bit of a shithole beofre, but it was great, always met really interesting people there

I have booked a trip to Ireland in May. I'm going with my girlfriend and her pensioner friend who suffers from dementia but drinks like a bastard. It's going to be a road trip and a half. I've been thinking of keeping a diary, if I am able. It seems a shame not to try to capture some of the deranged nonesense that will occur.

Thinking of going to Chicago for a few days, getting a bus down to Nashville and then to New Orleans. anyone been to/from any of these places? Thinking of going either in August or early October.

I wouldnt plan to do N.O in August - Hurricane Season!

I love the states, SF was a bit dull IMHO, but Alcatraz was fantastic, one of my fave memories of my brief times in the states. We went on the first trip in the AM, and didnt queue at all.

Ive always wanted to do Austin, Texas - its supposed to be amazing from a live music perspective, I'd love to do SXSW but couldnt justify the cost.

As much as its cliche, I'd love to drive route 66, simply because I really fancy small town america.

My dream holiday would be 2 months driving the entire nation.

Cool. Where are you going?

Going from Rosslare to Cork and staying one night there. Then driving down to Valentia Island where my folks have a place. At a later date we are driving up to Killarney for the night so that we can take in the races on the Sunday. I've booked us a table overlooking the course which comes with a meal and a few extras. I also want to take the women to Dingle and show them the home of Irish music. After that it'll be a detour to Ballybunion to take in the sea weed baths ( I can confirm that these are excellent if you are suffering a horrific hangover. In next to no time you are fit to drink again after one of them baths). Other than that it'll be mostly driving around the area around Valentia Island. Would also like to take a trip to The Skelligs. I've been going to Kerry all my life and still haven't been to the Skelligs, much to my regret.

Cool sounds great. Yeah Ballinskelligs is unreal. If you get nice weather its world class. Pain in the arse to get to but well worth it.

I've been to Ballinskelligs beach many a time and froze my bollocks off getting into the sea. I agree though, if you get the weather there it's delightful. In my previous post I meant the Skellig Islands. I'd really love to see the beehive buildings that the monks built on there. To think that they rowed out there from the mainland in all weathers is startling.

On one trip to Valentia Island I went to a cafe in an old farm house which claimed to be the most westerly cafe in Ireland ie next stop the USA. I sat there in the sun drinking a lovely red wine (yes, it was that kind of cafe) and looked at the coast line and thought ' it doesn't get much better than this'. Can't wait for this trip.

I once drove onto a ferry over to Ireland and got bolloxed drunk at the bar on board. Then went for a joint on deck. Then realised I was incapable of driving. The outcome was that my brother drove us off the ferry and into the night on a journey across the country in fairly thick fog. It really was visually and mentally quite stimulating.

just got back from morroco, pretty cool once I'd worked out I needed to be bartering people down down to 25% of their original asking price, heading out to eastern Europe next month and hoping the weather will be nicer than the UK

And there's this too which looks interesting;

or have a look at the Langholmen Hotel - a former prison

And yes I am bored - hence me looking up hotels I have no interest in visiting!

So have booked this. 3 weeks in September. Getting in Chicago, Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans and Dallas.

Also going to drive to the Dockery Plantation in Mississippi (home of the delta blues) and do the JFK assassination thing in Dallas too.

Will be driving down Highway 61. B)

Can not wait!
