If the govt was smart they'd at least start allowing the voluntary kind.

Along with the saving, it would mean that having your dog put down as the humane thing to do would no long be a literary joke.

Isn't the main stumbling block to introducing voluntary euthanasia not whether people have a right to die, but that it leaves open the potential for abuse? Ie. family members claiming it to get inheritance + paying off doctors, lawyers, etc.

I think that is part of the argument but I think it goes a lot deeper than that. There are the moral arguments, but I think many people see suicide as an act of desperation. Even the language we ure towards people with a terminal illness is aimed towards continuing life e.g. Losing a brave battle against cancer. There are those that even say that the person should soldier on for the sake of their loved ones.

agreed. It's based on a societal presumption that life is always preferable, and to choose to die is a sign of a disturbed mind, So people with terminal or incapacitating illness are considered to be depressed and incapable of objectivity.
