biffoire
I suppose Soni aren't quite as restricted in their headliners as Download. We'll see.
biffoire
I think all the rumours were for Sonisphere France - the only Sonisphere Maiden haven't played afaik - which could still be the case?
kipper64
Yep. The original rumour came from a metal radio station who were the ones who originally leaked Queen, Slash and Faith No MOre for soni france (which never actually happened in France but did for the UK) away back last november - they said Maiden were already booked for Soni 2013 in France. The radio station also sponsors Sonisphere France, so I don't doubt their credibility plus they were obviously in talks with them as 1 of 'em ended up at Soni france, and 2 of them at the UK. Hellfest then confirmed 6 months later in April during a press conference they wouldn't have Maiden next year (2013) as they are doing Sonisphere France. It's the only Sonisphere they've never done, and the euro legs are returning for sure, so it makes sense really. I think most people (myself included) just figured Kili would try for the safe bet to get Maiden at Soni UK to ensure it returns, because even though there'd be yells of 'boring repeat/soni can only survive with Maiden-Metallica", it'd still sell well enough to continue, but obviously that hasn't happened, whether they were trying aggressively for them or not, I'm not sure - though I can't have seen them not at least trying. We don't even really know when they had planned to do Download either I guess, so could have been a case they already agreed to DL well in advance too? Justiceforcedave
How are download restricted by the headliners they can book compared to Sonisphere?
kipper64
I always thought Download was a bit weird in how they book bands, they seemed to experiment a fair bit in the earlier years, but more recently I think it has become quite rigid - but at the same time there seems to be token acts that they'd go for like your Pendulums and Prodigy's etc... I've seen Andy say on twitter he wouldn't book Deep Purple, or someone like Kasabian as they "aren't right for Download", but then he says he'd love to book Jay-Z or Eminem or whatever who are surely even less rock? I do think Sonisphere isnt much different though I do see what you are saying. And you do get bands like Placebo, or say Weezer playing Sonisphere, two bands that have never seemed to play Download (not sure if that's because they've never wanted to play or Andy hasn't pursued them though!) luckysalt
So did Download announce early (it's usually November) because Rammstein wanted to? Or could Sonisphere have something worth watching up their sleeves? Surely Soni aren't going to leave it as late as they did last year? kaosmark2
Andy said even before this years festival that they were going to go even earlier for 2013, said they wanted to do it as soon as they could after this years festival, once they have the headliners in theres no reason not to he says now, they say they do this because it gives people longer to save up and they have more chance to use the new deposit scheme, which seems to be something more festivals are pushing. biffoire
I think he means do book rather than can book.
mrtourette
Well yeah it depends what angle you're coming from, and whether the choices are self-restricted or restricted by outside forces. I think the original point was that Download is more (self-)restricted because they take fewer risks regarding pushing bands up to headline status or having non-metal bands (I don't necessarily agree with that before someone starts posting about The Prodigy, I just think that was the original point), hence his comments about RHCP and Muse. if you want to put the financial spin on it then yeah maybe Download have fewer restrictions because they can afford more/bigger bands, although this is turn may be what drives Soni to try new or different headliners, so restrcitions on one front can lead to taking risks and being more open (although obviously wuth varying degrees of success). Same with bands wanting (or not wanting) to play after what happened last year. I think if justiceforcedave had used the work 'restrictive' rather than 'restricted' it may have made more sense (not a criticism though dave!). biffoire
I see Daves point and don't disagree with him (for once ) but yeah, just looking at it from a slightly different angle.
Justiceforcedave
Yes to all of the above.
eFestivals
there's a poster doing the rounds.... While I wouldn't be surprised to see Iron Maiden doing the euro Soni's, I really can't see that Download would have booked them and allowed them to also do Soni. So I'm guessing that Hart Attack has been at work.

lharris92
pretty sure that poster (or a similar one) was doing the rounds at some point in august cause it got this response: https://www.facebook.com/Pantera/posts/10151130693564697

zahidf
it wasn't hart attack. I know who made that one. It's fake lol
biffoire
I'd have thought having the whole line up booked before they have even confirmed the festival as going ahead would be an even bigger give away. Also the fact that it looks like Stevie Wonder designed it.
devilman
They can't even decide if it's sonisphere.co.uk or .com with 2 lines so I'm guessing it's fake. Maiden at 2 rival fests is a nonsense.
kipper64
It's definitely fake, I know the guy who made it. He didn't even make it as a fake to trick people, just out of boredom as a wishlist like 6 months ago. It even says on the bottom left corner created by Jack Loads of people picked it up though, even Pantera had to run a news story to say it's a fake. SOAD
Will be gutted if it doesn't go ahead Although I suppose it will give me the oppurtunity to check out Latitude or Bestival
