I'm not sure either party would want to risk a repeat of this year. Maybe the organisers are happy that it wasn't Kiss that dragged it down this year and with a stronger line-up it'll be fine, and maybe they've managed to convince the band (or throw enough money at them to persuade them) that there won't be a repeat cancellation next year.

Kiss are one of those bands I think which people will be happy to go see if the other headliners are good, but not a great ticket seller in themselves. It was the Queen thing that killed this yeat, I know loads of people who go to festivals, loads of people into rock/alternative/metal, and they all thought it was a bad idea, didn't know one single person who thought it was good, it was a turn off to everyone.

in which case they fail the necessaries for what a headliner needs to do.

Fopr the bigger fests it's the headliners that sell the tickets; it's the rest that is the filler.

Obivously being a KISS fanboy I have to try and not let my feelings get in the way of my better judgment however if KISS have been booked again then there must be a reason and Sonisphere must be confident that they can use them to shift tickets (why else book them?).

Soni last year suffered from a number of problems I feel, Queen were not deemed a suitable headliner for a heavy rock festival, Download had a steller lineup (had it not been so good I'm sure more would have gone to Sonisphere), they announced very late in the day and the KISS day was terrible value for money on account of the fact that it was still £75 quid for half a day of bands (not huge bands either), essentially just a very expensive KISS gig.

I disagree with your point about bands on their own not being a big enough draw defeating their purpose, surely it's important to get the right balance of all your headline bands?

Let me give you an example. Rammstein and Iron Maiden are not enough for me personally to buy a Download ticket, when I heard Pearl Jam had been added I decided that I was gonna go...then I when I found out it was actually Slipknot, I changed my mind again (likewise Pearl Jam on their own would not be enough for me to buy a ticket).

I think that KISS or Fait No More (probably not both) with a decent pair of other headliners to back them up could sell tickets.

it's important to get the right balance but the primary thing is the ability to shift tickets.

After all, if the headliners are not shifting your tickets, the undercard is not going to shift the tickets either. They, by definition, are lesser draws than the headliner.

A fest can get away with one weaker headliner of the three, but only in certain circumstances - such as were there's enough confidence in the other two headliners to shift enough weekend tickets to make up for the shortfall caused by that we4aker headliner.

But that's not any situation that Soni is in. It does not have the rep to have the sway to do that, particularly after having to cancel this year. Weak will just be seen as weak in Soni's case and will dissuade people from going at all, rather than encourage people to buy weekend tickets which also take in that weaker band.
