Where are the older bands?!

I know I'm going to start sounding like a broken record.... I also understand that Reading is a festival with a younger demographic.... however, look at the main stage lineup from the last 3 years.

Exuding the headliners this year, where are the older bands?!

Where are the Queens of the Stone Ages, The NOFXs, The Weezers, The Cyrpress Hills, The Offsprings, The Deftones, The Jimmy Eat Worlds, The Madness'? You could count the bands who have been around for 10+ years on barely one hand this year.

Discuss! (And obviously rip me a new arse hole and tell me why I'm wrong/stupid/a combination of the 2.)

i know thats not mega old but same sort of age as weezer and Queens of the stone age.

the lock up always throws a few oldies in as well, last few years has had descendents,NoFx,Bad religion, etc.

I'm of the opinion that a festival should try and put on the best lineup they can. We shouldn't be boxing bands into groups like 'new', 'old', 'heavy', 'indie' etc. Festivals should be booked on the very best music of that year, and the best bands available at the time of booking. 3 headliners from originating in the 70's could be just as good as 3 headliners originating in the past 5 years. It just depends on what is available to the bookers at the time. Reading Festival 2012 should represent the best music of 2012. Be that most popular artists of 2012, up and coming artists, legends who are touring, etc etc. We should look back and see the lineup as the definite list of bands best for Reading in this year.

Sad as it might sound, I count the number of bands on the Main Stage who played at Leeds when it was at Temple Newsam as a measure of a line-up's strength - so at least 10 years ago - and the longevity of certain bands.

2010 had 9

2011 had 9

2012 has 1...

Part of what makes Reading and Leeds fairly unique is that it usually has a good blend of new and upcoming acts on the Main Stage with older veteran bands. Not this year though.

You could say that the older, more acclaimed line-ups - 2000 and 2002, for example - were mainly full of bands that were modern at the time, but maybe that's a testament to how strong the music scene was back then, compared to now?

...Soni and Download seem to have/had some older acts.

And in regards to "boxing" bands into groups, I'm 27 and personally like a good mix of new and old bands and I sort of feel like I haven't got as much of a balance as with previous years. I appreciate that doesn't bother you... but me, I like to see some bands I loved when I was younger and the odd "legend" type band who I wouldn't usually get to see.

Petty much every year there's a few older bands high up on the bill.... not this year.

I do agree with you that a few more older bands would have been nice although my ticket was already purchased purely on the basis of the three headliners and The Black Keys so anything else was only ever going to be a bonus. Feeder or New Order would have gone down a treat for me though!
