that girl who died running the marathon

there is an article on the BBC: "Why did Claire Squires' marathon death strike such a chord?"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-17862293

Isnt the answer to that question: because she was white, middle class, slim and pretty?

I doubt the story would have got much more than half a page if it had been an enormous black fatty who works in pound stretcher who died. Sad but true.

(this has been ranked a 5 star post, please rate me accordingly)

This forum is incredibly tame compared to some others I frequent. I'm not saying it's right or wrong to make light of such situations but I do think that sometimes people like to pick and choose which subjects to be outraged at, then again, I also think that some people go out their way to be "controversial".

my original point stands.

Certain tragic events involving a certain type of people always strike a chord with the Great British general public. This isnt a new or controversial view.

This "ranking" of tragedy seems to me to be a relatively new phenomenon. I wonder if it is unique to the UK?

I guess it's just people blindly being led by the media.

And heaven forbid anyone that actually questions it!

it's not new, and it's not UK-only.

There's an identified phenomenon called "missing white girl syndrome" for example, which gets to mean that if a cute white girl goes missing (eg: maddie) it gets a hugely higher profile than if it were an ugly black girl.

The stupid people are the ones that buy into such things on the basis of their prejudices.

is it fair to say then that most of the people who have donated money to this girl, or put the "find maddy" poster in their windows, somewhere inside them believe that white people are "better" than black people? And middle class people are "better" than poor people? An unconscious feelng no doubt, but still there.

it does doesnt it?

Is it a new thing? (the ranking of tragedy) We have this debate fairly often. Questioning it is one thing... to say you (not you) would have fucked her... ? why? is it funny?.. to some it probably is...

is it controversial? a bit... but not very

I'm almost definitely giving this way more attention than I 'need' to

It's fair to say that the average person has been led there by a racist media. If you're not donating money to this lovely white girl's cause then there must be something horrible about you, innit. ;)

But ultimately, it screams racism. The same people wouldn't get the same motivation for any non-white cause no matter how much the media told them it was worthy.

It's kind of like the whole Shannon Matthews-Madeline McCann comparison. Yeah, sure, one of the cases turned out to be a crock of shite, but on one hand you had this 'perfect', middle-class and christian couple who used their considerable resources to getting the press to go wild about it, whilst on the other hand, you had what some would call Jeremy Kyle fodder, talking with a thick accent about a slightly odd looking child

So people donated money because they are white racists...

LMAO... Some of you lot need to get out more :)

So care to tell me why the same fuss never gets made over a black person?

No matter how it's working, racism is a huge part of what is going on, as shown by the visible difference between how 'the public' react to an instance involving someone white compared to someone black.

For you to dismiss that you'll have to come up with something better than meaningless laughter.

And if you can't give good reason for your laughter that also intelligently addresses the differences in public reaction, guess what you've just displayed of yourself?

Plus as someone above has said I never Knew her colour, until I saw a picture the other day, and then never thought anything about it. I see some on here do so I guess this happens with the wider population. Sad really. One day people will not be judged on colour, or how they react to some event.

Don't tar everyone with your own demons Neil

My apologies for not being just the tiniest bit clearer in my generalisations.

But seeing as you put yourself in here, please do tell me of what sad tragic cause related to a black female individual you donated to.... or would I be exposing your own 'demons' by asking that question?

(PS: if the answer to that question is 'none' but you've also donated nothing to the cause of this dead runner, then your comment is 100% misplaced because how the fuck do you know?)
