thetime
We are in hard times where I work and the union has voted for short time overmaking people redundant. In a workforce of around 200 people there is 28 people in the union. Should the whole worforce have a vote or only union members? Been told its only union members even though its only small percentage in union.
Yoghurt on a Stick
I don't actually know but it would seem very strange that a union with minority members of a work force could dictate what policy should be adopted. It would appear to me that the 28 members of the union could vote for anything and it'd not make a difference if the other members of the work force decided on another course of action. That said maybe the union has got the right idea in that at least every one gets to do some work and no one gets laid off. Presumably the union has taken this approach in consultation with the management.
sifi
If only 14% of the workforce are unionised, I think the company might be able to de-recognise the union. There was an article on it in IDS magazine last month, I'll see if I can dig it out next week.

eFestivals
The tories hates for small union votes to even effect all union members, but they've no problem at all with small 'democratic' votes they've championed effecting the whole population. Anyone might think they apply double standards.
