Tickets from eBay

Evening all,

The girlfriend's looking to come to Reading this year - but, understandably, isn't 100% mainly down to the cost of it. I know that last year (and this year so far), tickets are available on eBay for lower than face value - but I'm always a bit cautious about doing this, and have never personally purchased other than through the likes of See Tickets.

Any advice on doing this? Seems like a great way to grab a ticket at a lower price, which would convince her to go. What should i be looking out for? Is ebay the best place?

Cheers guys!

I did it last year, picked up a ticket for just under £100.

You can do it, but it isn't guaranteed. I knew other people who were looking and didn't get one, or paid around full-price. Watch for delivery fees as well.

The most important thing is to understand it's a risk. Buy so that when you return from the festival you'll still have time to file a claim if the ticket was invalid for some reason, and accept that there is a risk that you might not get in with whatever you buy. Most tickets will be genuine, but if it's a fake one, while you *should* get your money back, you'll get your money back rather than a replacement ticket, and won't be able to claim travel costs, etc.

I did it last year and will do it again this year, but that's because I live nearish, transport costs are neglible compared to the cost of the ticket, I'm not camping and will be heading home after, and ultimately, if I don't get in, I can put up with that.

If you 100% want to get in and know you're not getting scammed, you need to buy from official sellers. If you've got your own ticket via see or someone you're at an advantage as you'll have a genuine one to compare it to, but there's still a risk. Saying that, as long as you're buying from late-July onwards, you should be fine. Ideally, you want to buy from someone who's received and has photographed the ticket(s) so you're sure. Although pay attention and don't fall for scams like this:

I saw the listing when it was up, and I think most people would agree the type of people who would have fallen for it would generally have turned up at a book club festival or technology convention by accident anyway.

It said something like: YOU ARE NOT BIDDING FOR ACTUAL TICKETS, YOU ARE BIDDING FOR PHOTOGRAPHS.

And with regards to the torches, if the runners are forced to pay for them anyway, why should they not have the option to sell them on? It's the perfect example of the free market economy the Olympics promotes, so they can't have a word of complaint about it.

Nearer the time of the festival, once tickets have been delivered, you could have a look for tickets on ebay that are in your local area that you can pick up. Thats what my girlfriend did last year, got the weekend ticket for about £100 and I went with her to pick it up so she didn't get fucked over. That's what I'm planning on doing this year, I'm sure there'll be an abundance of people desperate to sell tickets at the last minute.

Personally, this is the most helpful response yet :D

In all seriousness, thanks kaos, given me a lot to think about. I imagine it'll end up going down the official route - although I'd be willing to take the risk, I'm not sure she would. In addition to this, realistically if it is a fake it would be two tickets not getting in, not just one ;) Or at least double the transport costs of taking her home and coming back :P

Thanks guys
