So why sign a player that doesn't give any improvement over that, and whose form over a number of Prem seasons is a bit hit and miss?

It's not a dreadful signing - as I've said he'd be a decent back-up striker - but he's still a dead end signing.

Dempsey has been quality for the past two years. I don't think he's been 'hit or miss', it's just he's been a bit of a late bloomer. Came over to England at the age of like 24 and took a while to settle in. If he keeps the form he had last season at Liverpool he'll be a quality signing - he's a bit on the older side but he's always been more about movement / intelligence then pace / acceleration. He'll get better before he gets worse.

He was the 4th top scorer last season in the prem. That's without any penalties to boost his tally and with most those goals coming from midfield at Fulham - a side who score a lot less goals then most (Albeit more then Liverpool, haha). No recurring injuries either, doesn't look to get fatigued etc.

I don't think he'll go Liverpool though - I reckon he wants to play in the Champions League and won't settle for less. LIverpool probably really want him though, they're already making their 'marketing push' to the USA market and Dempsey would help that a lot. Just he's always said in interview he wants to play in the Champs... we'll see.

The other rumour floating about is us trying to swap him for Carroll (with us putting some money on top)... not sure if its legit but I think we have some interest in Carroll either way.

Obviously can't tell much from a pre-season friendly, but I'd be concerned for West Ham off the back of that.

Yep. From my experience pre-season friendlies are no reflection on how good a team is what so ever. Especially so early on.

You haven't seen him play that often so? I love watching him play. He is undeniably a great player. But one of those players who you have to give the ball to. He won't go get it.

Maiga signed by West Ham. Should be interesting seeing him play, talented, but considering we rejected him on medical grounds and accepted Ba with his knee issues, it suggests there might be a few problems there. Still, even if they only get 15 so games out of him he might do enough to keep them up, definitely got some quality.

Completely. I love some of the goals shown there, the top 3 are all special, but the control and turn in 11 is magnificent.

Because he only gets shown over here occasionally, and the British media slag him off. He had a few poor games against English sides, and a few average ones. I hadn't seen a particularly good game from Pirlo before these Euros but that doesn't mean he's a mediocre player. If you watch how Messi's been against Chelski or away games at Arsenal he doesn't look like the best player in the world, doesn't mean jack. It's a few games in a magnificent career.

I watch slot of spanish football and he was average there aswel not just champions league.

I dont think thats an unreasonable comment but I think its largely due to the fact that his best football has been in serie A which we dont get exposed to in this country. There are probably spanish football fans who say the same about Rooney because they dont see him destroying the likes of wigan and bolton every week.

I dont agree he was average in the recent euros though, In a tournament where most of the big name strikers stunk the place out, I thought he really stood out in one of the worse teams in the compeition.

How about the 2006 world cup? I thought he had a great tournament.

United would be mad to pay that, listening to Tim Vickery the only pundit I trust on south american football he is very raw. Considering that south americans often have problems adapting its too much of a gamble.
