eFestivals
Rules him out of going to City then so. City "buy the title" in the same way as Utd or Chelsea, by buying the best players. Juve buy the title in a completely different way, as shown by them only winning the title when Italian footie is proven corrupt.
pink_triangle
Rules him out of going to City then so. Speaking of paying mad money for unknowns, seems this Lucas Moura deal has some truth in it afterall. Rafael saying yesterday that hes spoken to Lucas about it and he is excited about joining Utd. The Nal
Lucas' father: "We had offers from Madrid, Chelsea etc but Lucas just wants to go to Manchester United." Pass the ball though for fucks sake! Tim Vickery says Lucas reminds him of Theo Walcott and thinks it would be mad to pay that sort of money for a player based purely on potential. pink_triangle
Hes talking out of his arse re: Walcott but I agree its a huge risk paying that money for potential. But what potential! Some serious skill on the lad.
The Nal
Many a manger and fan has been fooled judging a footballer by youtube clips. I wouldnt say Vickery is always correct but he probably more qualified to pass judgement than most others watching him regularly in 90 minute games. pink_triangle
Same amount as Rooney cost, and that was buying potential.
eFestivals
Same amount as Rooney cost, and that was buying potential. Hmmm ... I know nothing about this Lucas, but with Rooney there was no risk. It was a no-brainer. His natural talent shone thru, and while there was the possibility it might fade over the years, there was no doubt that anyone buying him would have access to his skills immediately. As far as I can remember, there's been no other young player in my lifetime who so very obviously had the skills, and that nothing about it was a flash in the pan. Anyone buying him knew what they'd get.
The Nal
Its a lot bigger gamble because its not just about talent but also being able to settle in a different country with different language and culture.

The Nal
Is Skrtel looking to leave? Interesting comments to the media over the weekend. See Wenger has given RVP 3 weeks to get things sorted. Are they offering him a new deal or what?
5co77ie
No risk? He'd had 18 months of playing part-time in the Prem, with more yellow cards than goals and assists, a bad temperament and a tendency to chase the ball like a 5 year old. Just because he worked out doesn't mean that it wasn't a gamble. Disturbingly true.
Steve P
I personally think RVP should go to Juventus,
The Nal
At Everton? Or once he moved to Man U? In two seasons he played 67 games at Everton, and his yellow card tally doesn't sound right although back then he was skinning defenders and they tended to get petulent. I never doubted his potential in a Blue shirt and in the Youth Team he was awesome. After he left Moyes' charge he became a bit petulent, but that was after he'd already been sold. thetime
That's what fergie does though, buys potential. Some come of some dont. For every ronaldo there's a anderson, for every Rooney there's a bebe. I was listening to a report Fergie has not paid a fee for a over 26 year old in 15 years. Unsure how accurate that was as I thought berba was over 26, although Fergie does like to take a punt on players. There's going to be more Portuguese speaking players at United than English shortly. eFestivals
His potential was always pretty high, my point isn't that he wasn't talented, it's that he wasn't a proven player. if he wasn't 'proven' it was only because Moyes tried not to play him too much. The point is, proven or not, he was about the safest bet you ever get with a youngster.

thetime
I knew quite a lot of people at the time who weren't sure whether he'd make it because of his temperament.
Benj
He played over 70 games for Everton in the two years before he left and was most certainly a regular 1st team starter before he went to Utd In other Everton news (as opposed to olds in Rooneys case) it looks like Tim Cahill has played his last match for the club. He is supposedly off to NY Red Bulls
lost
regarding Rooney from a pace point of view I don't think he's actually been the same since he injured his foot in Euro 2004, though his vision and goal scoring got better at Utd.
