Just wondering if anyone else saw the light following the Olympics where the vast vast majority of competitors where there for the love of the sport and not money.

because of course the players in the lower leagues are only there for the money.

It's really no different at all. Athletes or footballers, they are all hoping to be up there with the best (and then also get the rewards that come with it) but are happy just to be doing it if/until that happens.

There's of course greedy fuckers in football, but for balance I give you Linford Christie, Usain Bolt, Jessica Ennis, and many others. Once you're up there then you might as well scoop up what you can.

Just occasionally within and outside sport there's someone different. I give you Adam Yauch.

If those players were exerting themselves for the money, they wouldn't be footballers.

Good news for Liverpool that Agger wants to stay. Given that he's one of the best defenders around (if he stays fit ) and Liverpool need the better players if they're going to get back around the top, they really need to knock City back whatever they might offer.

They did, so i've recently read. I'm guessing that the Prodigy don't use the BB's sample in their live shows now.

Re- there being far less/ no cheating or bitching in the Olympics, having first hand witnessed Beach Volleyball, 'Proper' Volleyball and Handball its really no less rife than in football, at least the difference is far less than made out. I saw a whole world of bitching in the volleyball, players getting in the umpires faces etc and a fair few dives in the handball

Also a British cyclist admitted 'falling over' after a bad start and the rowing commentary, from Steven Redgrave no less, suggested that if the UK team, who had an issue near the start, had nothing broken as such, should 'sure make sure it was broken' before the stewards got to the boat. Not exactly the fair play the media is falling over itself to present.

The main difference to me was simply the humility of the Athletes and sheer joy of victory, that you just don't get so much from Footballers at the top of the game

And funnily enough, the players you name all get an England/GB shout before Carrick. In fact they'd probably get a Utd shout before Carrick given how little he plays.

Carrick is many things, but "world class" and "playmaking" are not the first words that would come to mind. My post was agreeing with you, but I guess that's not allowed when you're wearing the blinkers.

I would say the proof will be when he goes to real madrid and see how he responds at a bigger club, better player, more expectation.

Only gerrard out of the ones you mentioned have not done it at top top clubs, winning leagues and Titles. Can modric do it every week? Where at spurs he didnt need to, at madrid he will have to or he wont get in the side.

Gerrard would've got on fine at Madrid or wherever. Hes played (and is still playing) with some awful shit over the years.
