Telegraph reporting it's £15m initial btw (they have rising to £22m).

Talks between United and Arsenal are understood to have progressed well on Wednesday, with the final stage being a discussion about add-ons to take the deal to a final figure of £22m.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had insisted that the Old Trafford club would not pay in excess of £15m for Van Persie, with Arsenal holding out for £25m.

But a compromise has been reached with United understood to be paying £15m as an initial payment, with further fees dependent on add-ons linked to Van Persie’s appearances, goals and silverware won as a United player.

Be interesting if it works out, but can see why Fergie's gone for him. I'd presume this means we've found a buyer for Berba, so Rooney would've been the only experienced forward. Got a lot of hope for Welbeck, and Hernandez on form is a good option still, but questionable whether they'd be ready to step up and score 20-30 goals if Rooney did his cruciate tomorrow. RVP provides good insurance against that (well unless he too does his cruciate), can play as a no.10 or no.9, is experienced, good overall age profile for what Fergie likes; RVP 29, Rooney 26, Hernandez 24, Welbeck 21. And we have lost a lot of experience given some of the exits last year and likes of Park this year.

Slightly concerned how it impacts Kagawa, as he's at his best behind the forward (and has looked great there pre-season), whereas this might mean trying to adapt him to a deeper role, or playing him wide (where he plays for his national team).

But if it is indeed £15m initial, then can understand why Fergie's gone for him.

Corrected for you...

I mean seriously the big news this week is Manchester United share sell off and them spunking £24 million on a 29 year old... While the international friendly is largely ignored by both professionals and fans either through "injury" or because its dull and pointless :)

:) Yeah but its all about the "sport" :D

Although the money has increased of course the sport side still grabs us. The comparison between the two is dull. One is a completely pointless international friendly played largely for money. Played just after a failed Euros played largely with reserves stuck in a week between the Community Shield and the league opening. The other is a one team's best player crossing a bitter divide... It's exciting and relevant! However you try and dress the friendly up... it isn't really.

Oh and nobody start saying the Olympics isn't about the money etc. How do you think we improved so much? As much as the media want to portray it as such, Team GB aren't plucky amateurs scraping funding together. They are extremely well funded athletes who have spent four years preparing for this last fortnight. I just can't see why a successful and fun Olympics sees the need for loads of people to kick football, its fans and footballers. It's so fashionable at the moment. As much as we moan about football, it is fantastic fun.

Really sad to see RVP go, but such is at my club these days. IF we now spend the money on a replacement it's actually a pretty good piece of business given his age and injury record, but i woun't be at all surprised to see nobody else coming in. Really hope i'm proved wrong.

The most annoying bit is the "i'll always be a gunner at heart" crap he was spouting in his statement a couple of months ago. Us fans are all pretty gullible, but we're not that stupid.

Anita confirmed :D

Very chuffed. Now got a 3rd top centre-mid. Can play 4-3-3 without relying on Guttierrez as a DM, a bit more cover at full-back, no need to rely on Perch if Tiote gets injured. Adds a lot of options and good talent. £6.3m isn't quite as good as Cabaye at £4.3m or Tiote at £3.5m but still excellent.

Now lets get that promised FB in.... Debuchy for preference but given we've been linked with half the RBs in Europe I'd just like the position sorted. And we've supposedly got a deal to sell Simpson to Reading for £2m the moment we sign someone.
