He then came out and had a fantastic season, which was way above what he had been producing in the previous year or two. We tried to keep him but Real came in and he forced a move. We let Alonso go in the same way you let Ronaldo go. The problem was that we didn't replace him.

After 2008/09 we really could have kicked on and won the league. For a huge number of reasons the club just disintegrated. Dark days.

I dont think thats the case. Ronaldo was begging to go the previous year, literally on his hands and knees in Fergies office and Fergie said "No. Give me one more year".

Alonso wasn't happy, sure, but the Barry pursuit, and a very public pursuit at that, really pissed him off didn't it?

I saw Alonso play in Anfield vs Villa in 07ish I think and it was, and he ran the show. Glorious player.

I think thats an over simplistic way of looking at it, theres a huge difference between the 2 situations and thats the 2010 world cup. IN international football theres a huge case of out of sight out of mind. Look at the 2010 world cup final and only 1 players from the starting 11 wasnt a real madrid or barcelona player. Even if not 100% happy it was essential for Alonso to move that year to maximise his chances of making the world cup first 11 in a year which was probably his best chance of winning a medal. He probably would have made the trip as a liverpool player, I doubt he would have started every game.

I think there is a difference, silva was a regular starter in euro 08, alonso was a sub. When silva joined city he was already an established Spain starter but I don't think alonso nailed the position until he joined Madrid.

Silva played a bit part in the WC. After 2 years at City, he's now starting.

I don't think its fair to say city turned silva into a Spanish regular. He was a regular in euro 2012 and wc qualifying 2010th before he joined city. He lost his place in the world cup due to a dodgy game and got it back soon after the tournament. He has been a Spanish regular for most of the last 5 years, the majority of which he wasn't at city.

Which one of those was out on loan for two years? Your post wasn't on about Aquilani. It mentioned Voronin (sold), Jovanovic (moved on) and some kids (don't know which kids we struggled to shift).

I'm pretty sure that both of those spent two years out on loan before they were off LFC's books. I'm pretty sure that the reason they ended up doing that is because both were on stonking contracts because they'd been signed on frees.

But I've not checked and I could be wrong.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to suggest that City turned him into a regular, but it certainly didn't do any harm. He'd lost his place, and regained it while at City.

I think that only El Clasico players play for Spain is a myth.

Danny Murphy gone to Blackburn. Won't be seeing much of him again. Always really liked watching him as a player. Lovely lad too.
